And you want colleges to decide what people can and can’t say on their campuses?
That’s what we’re talking about here, right? Speech codes banning antisemitism or lose federal funding?
It does seem like we have a hard time, as a society, understanding free speech. Our nation tends to go in extremes both ways.
I don't think free speech should include harassing people, blocking access to buildings, blocking streets, entering restaurants or private property to harass people, etc.
At the same time, any type of speech can be allowed.
That being said, private schools can VERY MUCH regulate speech on their campuses. They are not government entities. Free Speech is protection from the government (The Constitution being directly from the Federal Government but most State Governments have Constitutions that provide similar protection as well as the 14th Amendments language), not from private entities.
I feel like we are going too far in limitation at times with the antisemitic speech. It needs to be allowed even if it is offensive. That being said, some of the protest last year were "not free speech" in my view, but were acts of criminal harassment. Protesters have a way of not staying in their lane and that is the problem.
What the guy at the Superbowl did at halftime was not a violation of any law (in a government sense) and was protected by "Free Speech." Now, he could have violated private rules and that can be addressed by firing him from ever performing again.
