That's not the current system. It is what she has personally supported for years.

She, like you, pretty much holds the public school system in contempt. How she can lead it, I do not know. Everything about her outsider commentary on it suggests she does not want to lead as much as she wants to unravel it.

Why should someone who choses a religious education for their children be forced to pay education taxes, which are supposed to be for educating their children? Shouldn't the taxes at least be pro-rated? If not, then remove them from being taxed for education. They then spend their money as they wish, and not one of your single dollars of taxes goes to a religous school.

Aren't most religious schools private?

I don't think any public money should go towards religious schools. I don't have an issue with religion but religion should not be part of a person's education. That's why you have church.

I'm pretty sure that many (most) religious schools are primarily schools that have some religious content here or there but they are 90% education.

When I went to public school prayer was allowed - so some religion was involved (religious content).

How about no money to religious or public schools? Public education is run by the government so naturally it sucks. There should be a separation of state and education clause.

She may not be..... I have no idea, but I wonder if this may not be a positive rather than a negative:

DeVos has no professional experience in public schools, and she did not attend public schools herself or send her own children to them.

Is this like public money being used to perform abortions?

Personally I don't care what someone chooses to do with regard to getting an abortion..... they're the ones that have to deal with the consequences..... but I don't want to pay for it....... which is a dilemma because if the abortions are not performed.....I still end up paying for it..... much more.

Ideology alone shouldn't be enough to be confirmed to a Cabinet position. She demonstrated to varying degrees a lack of knowledge on almost every aspect of education. You can't tell me there isn't someone infinitely more qualified who holds pro-school choice positions.

Actually, there is just one more GOP Senator needed to block her nomination and her vote has been moved up so Sessions could still vote prior to his confirmation as Attorney General.

Also, it now appears that key sections of her written responses during her hearing were lifted from the works of other authors (per the Associated Press). She was very shaky even as it was. Her broken record "I am for accountability" exchange with Tim Kaine and her "guns against grizzlies" answer were just weird. She is also very inexperienced.

I'm not supporting her as I know absolutely nothing about her. My only thought was that public schools are so f'ed up right now that her not having ANY experience in the public school system might not be a bad thing.

She is unqualified in any reasonable person's opinion. If she is confirmed, it will be proof that the republicans are just going to rubber stamp anything Trump places in front of them.

School choice is disastrous by the way. I think everyone knows what the logical extension of school choice is, and that's exactly why many are in support.

I definitely see your point. The education establishment is toxic, and an outsider has a lot of appeal.

I just think that lack of experience is one thing, but lack of knowledge whatsoever is something else entirely. You could claim that Perry is unqualified for his nominated position, but he has made an earnest attempt to educate himself on the issues. I didn't see the same from DeVos.

I've only seen her on tv once and didn't hear her speak. I truly know absolutely nothing at all about her. Everything I've heard though has been negative.
