Pride of the Southland not going to Norman

Has it always been like this? Seems like I remember Ainge leading the band in Athens as a freshmen. Or maybe I've just lost too many brain cells and the years are mashing together....

It's oklahoma--state full of yahoos. Staying home won't be terrible.

Based on what? Please enlighten me......I guess the state of Oklahoma had no Vol fans living there? Using this kind of logic equates to this guy.

Before this year....an SEC school could not stop a visiting SEC band from performing at half-time. The rules have changed, and GA will not allow UT's band to perform at half-time...so, only a pep band will go to the GA game. GA said they are honoring former coach Vince Dooley at half-time and will not have time for the Dooley celebration, the GA band, and the UT band. Personally, I think it sucks for any school to stop a visiting band from marching.

If that's true then we should never allow their band to march in Neyland again...ever.

That we can't "afford" it is total BS, we have decided not to at some level. This is shameful, and someone at the University needs to answer. Even in our down years in 80's we had one of the greatest and renowned marching bands. their size has shrunk to half and we can't field an away band? Lack of pride, by some micro managing business a-hole if you ask me. We should have the band at Norman....

Yeah it is. Of course there's not much about OU that isn't annoying...

As a reminder they came up with this:

Couple of minutes of your life you won't get back.

(but it is kind of a catchy tune)

I'm serious I'm about to start burning mattresses over the band not going, even the punk a** division ii schools would take a band to Norman. I know we have hurt ourselves budget wise via mismanagement and paying a list of coaching staffs to "not be here" but I also know the millions this program makes.....the band is a matter of pride, and at a venue like Norman that loss of pride, is noticed.....their boards are already laughing it up about that. I think Tulsa brought a band. I take this personally, maybe we should change it to the Lack of Pride of the Southland band, and just stuff a DJ in a majorette suit.......this is a steaming pile of male bovine feces.

I will warn everyone that the OU yell leader (or whatever you call them) shoot off guns each time they score and at kickoffs. Super annoying.

Rufneks... goofy male pep group. They wear white jeans and drive the wagon, and shoot the shotguns. They're on the field, but only on the north endzone side, opposite side from the Visitor section.

Not surprised they aren't taking the entire band. Very expensive.

BUT, not taking a pep band is ridiculous. It may not be up to our athletic dept. Many schools now longer allow visiting teams to bring pep bands. I don't know the particulars of this situation. Either way though, we should be allowed by OU to bring a pep band and our athletic dept. should be happy to pay for it. It just seems petty if OU won't allow it and/or our folks won't pay for it.

Just my two cents. :twocents:

Not OU's fault.... I've seen some teams bring their whole band, some bring none. I'm shocked Tennessee isn't bringing the band, and bummed. Love me some Rocky Top. Some teams are even allowed to perform on the field during halftime.

Could this have any anything to do with home teams wanting to keep those seats/tickets available to sell? Just curious

No...

Visitor sections are 35, 36, 40. For big games, those three are full. For smaller teams/games, 35 may be full, or 1/2 full and OU will sell 36 and 40 on a game basis to whoever. I'd be shocked if 35, 36, and 40 aren't solid orange on Saturday.

That being said... the visiting team's band is always in 35, the lowest X number of rows. Oklahoma State brings their whole band, for example, and they'll probably have the first 40 rows of that section. When Iowa State comes, and they bring a pep band, maybe the first 15-20 rows are full.

Regardless, point is OU makes available those sections to the visitors - about 5,000 seats - and what's not sold (or kept by the athletic department I guess) goes back to OU which they'll sell.

My brother was in The Pride (OU's band) and was actually the drum major and there's always internal politics in these band things. But, OU always had some mysterious donor front whatever shortage they were facing. I wish Tennessee had that this weekend...

Withhold about 1% of Harts salary and fund the band with it! Just a suggestion.

.

1% of Hart's salary would be enough to pay for the band to get about as far as Farragut.

I wish the full band could go everywhere. But spending six figures on it each trip just isn't something a athletic department can or should do.

What would it take to send the pep band? Is the money saved going to something better for the football program like facilities or something like that? It sucks but maybe more palatable if we knew the money saved was for a purpose other than being "cheap" as some suggest.

In 2002, Phillip Fulmer received a salary of 1.65 million per year and was the highest paid coach in the SEC. Let that sink in. All this money has to come from somewhere.

If you think it is bad now, wait until the power 5 conferences break off (not if, but when). When that happens, get ready for non revenue producing entities to be really cut back if not completely scraped.
