Pulling for SEC teams

Top tier teams winning all the time benefits them far more than it will ever benefit the rest of their conference, whatever that conference may be. Indiana will never pull in top midwestern kids because of Ohio State or Michigan doing well in the Big Ten. Kansas isn't going to be a powerhouse because Oklahoma and Texas are good in the Big 12. Tennessee will start pulling in more top recruits when we return to our tradition of winning. Winning and doing it more than anyone in the conference/nation is what drives in recruits. Simply slapping the SEC patch on your jersey won't do it. Otherwise, Vandy, Kentucky wouldn't be doormats most of the time.

This is where everyone is missing the point. It's not that we will recruit better because the other teams in our conference are "good". It's because the teams in our conference are THE BEST. The SEC puts out the best talent, the best rivalries, the best teams, and in the end win the most games, the most bowl games, and most National Championships. Kids want to play in a conference of champions. A 5-7 Tennessee team would not have recruited as well as it did if it was 5-7 in a weaker conference.

I always pull for the SEC team out of confrence. I view it all in a strength of schedule way and want every team that Tennessee plays to be undefeated so it looks better when we beat them, yes I know it's impossible as some of them play each other before they play Tennessee.

In the end it is just really being selfish. I would love it if no team could beat an SEC team other than other SEC teams.

Completely agree, although I admit I vomit a little in my mouth sometimes, especially if it involves UA or UF.

Vandy and KY wouldn't have stuck around for 80 years if the SEC didn't have a major advantage over conferences. :hi:

That advantage usually gets them nothing but 8 ass beatings a year and a permanent spot towards the bottom of the division and a comfy spot on the couch during bowl season. Alabama, LSU and UGA being successful clearly doesn't make them better just like it doesn't make UT better, which is why I don't give a damn about SEC teams I don't like.

Right. Because Vandy isn't better than a comparable team from the Big 10 or ACC.

You don't honestly believe this do you?

Ill generally root for SEC teams in Non-Conference games. The exceptions are Bama, UF, and UK

I would argue that a comparable team will amd does have more success. Northwestern has achieved more than Vandy has in my lifetime and the Big 10's dominance had nothing to do with their success.

The Big 10 has not been dominate in my lifetime. They have one outright national championship in the last 40 years.

I finally figured out my criteria. If an SEC team is playing someone from a legitimate conference (ACC, B1G, Big XII, PAC), I want the SEC to win, ala Auburn and Alabama tonight.

Any SEC team playing a lower-tier team, ala Florida today, I want them to lose and be extremely embarrassed.

Cool story, I know.

I agree for the most part...Only exception, Vandy. I hope they never win another game for as long as I live.

Agreed. I corrected myself later on in the thread, but it's since been buried.

I want Vandy 1-3 at best when they travel to Mizzou. 0-4 if somehow Presbyterian can roll them, too.

Vandy has lost to Duke, Army, Northwestern, and twice to Wake Forest since 2008. With the exception of last year and the first half of 08, they simply are not better than comparable teams from the ACC or Big 10.

Teams like Ky choose to go 4-8 every year in football. They had rather put all their eggs in the basket'ball. Winning football games is not Vandy's priority either.

That's even less motivation to pull for them. Teams who don't give a crap make the conference look bad. Why would anyone feel obligated to cheer for them out of conference?

I also find it ironic (and funny) that those on VN who wish UT's rivals would get embarrassed on a national stage in a out of conference game will in the same breath crack jokes about the pitifulness of non-SEC conferences.
and I find it funny that fans who claim to hate another team can turn around
and cheer for that team. I get that it's better for UT to play in a strong conference, but that doesn't that I'll be cheering for those teams.

I think I see the disconnect.

Would I rather see an SEC team beat up on a Big 10/XII/ACC team? Yes. I would much rather flex SEC muscle than have to listen to bandwagon fans from other conferences celebrate how they beat the SEC.

Am I actively cheering and 'rah, rah, rah-ing' for said SEC team? No. If they lose, at least I'll have satisfaction knowing they lost.

It really is a win/win in my book.

If you gave me the choice, say for example, to wear an Alabama t-shirt and Alabama wins, or just have Alabama lose, I'd take Alabama losing 100 times out of 100.

I understand why many UT fans are hesitant to cheer for other SEC schools

Your historic rival (Bama) and modern divisional rival (UF) have had more success recently.

Since UF started the BCS winning streak, I want to see it continue....unless UGA somehow makes the title game.

Quick question...has your head stood higher after a win over UT over the last 7 yrs or back in the 90s when UT and FL were at the top of the conference?? Just wondering.
