QB Joey Aguilar commits to UT from portal

Volnation rationale

Who else does Volnation think they should get? Brady & Tebow retired.
I like the pickup. We don't "steal" a starter, we add depth we absolutely had to have, and we still allow Merk a chance to win the job because he's probably up next in the portal if he doesn't.

JH can get the picks down. Hooker, Milton and Nico were all different QBs but all 3 were low interception totals. I think JHs offense helps with that. He has a short amount of time to learn the offense but he has what the other 2 on roster don't and that's experience.
I don’t think Heupel makes him learn the entire offense and will go over what he ran at App State and UCLA and try to find a way to bridge the gap between those offense and ours. We were already implementing some tighter sets and pistol formations in the spring. After watching Aguilar’s highlights I imagine we’ll install even more of it. You can still get a numbers advantage in the box without crazy wide splits. The QB just has to pay a little more attention to what the nickel does at the snap

So...we take a QB from a bad football team that UCLA didn't want in exchange for our starting QB coming off a playoff team? And this is suppose to be a good thing?

Its not a bad thing either, and probably one of our better options at this point. All signs pointed to Aguilar being “the guy” at UCLA this year or else they wouldn’t have paid him out in the portal.

Once they signed Nico, Aguilar knew he wouldn’t see the field so he started looking elsewhere. It’s not that UCLA didn’t want him, they just blew their money on someone they see as better. Who will come out smelling like a rose in this one? We will see in the fall. I can say that Aguilar is coming into a program with better talent than Nico is.

Aguilar went to a step up while Nico took a step down. UCLA is a has been and he’s only going there because no one else wanted him.

If they wanted him as their starter he wouldn't be gone and they wouldn't have gone after Nico.
If they could get a hometown kid with the upside and 2 extra years of eligibility that Nico has for the same price plus Madden it’s probably worth the risk for them with the position their program is in. It will probably help some with attendance and maybe Nico fits their system better than ours

I’d guess that’s the play. We only had two scolly QB’s on roster. I’d guess it’s still Merk’s job to lose but I think we’ll see an open competition
I don’t think Merk is going to win the starting job. This kid is coming in to start. I do think Merk will eventually be a good qb. I don’t think Heupel was ready to trust a red shirt freshman at Gainesville or Tuscaloosa this year. Aguilar has started games against high level competition.

HE left BECAUSE they took on Nico. They didn't get rid of him. Considering their lack of offense, I'd say they would have kept him and let them duke it out. Aguilar chose to look for a better opportunity.
