Question for board about next year's team...

The key will be replacing Stokes and Maymon inside........ I think A.J. Davis can be a solid player with 15 to 20 more pounds of muscle and I think Reese could definitely play a little pf as well as sf and he could bring the opposition's power forward out on the floor with a midrange shot which would create more spacing for teammates and I see Cofer and Turman as bench players at this point for 2015.

First year team had a bunch of young, mostly highly regarded players that had sat behind other highly regarded veterans, with year or 3 in Tatum's case winning a lot of games, under a great coach. Also had decent size. Kenny Hall might look like an under achiever, but he'd be getting 30 minutes a game on next years team with no sweat.

Next year's young team is high schoolers we're hoping pan out, some guys who occasionally go entire games without scoring as a bench unit, and a highly rated guy who is coming off a season ending injury.

What Kenny Hall are people remembering? Moore took over his spot in the starting lineup when Moore was a freshmen. Kenny Hall lacked effort some games and he didn't contribute very much.

I'm not using Hall to say he was great, I'm saying that's how undermanned we'll be in the post next season.

But as a junior he averaged 6 points, 5 boards and shot 54% from the floor in 17 minutes per game. He was also a decent shot blocker, I think he led the team one of his years at UT. His big issue on the floor was usually foul trouble. Next year we could desperately use a 6'9 240 pound guy with similar athletic ability and stats. He'd probably average 10/8 with 25 minutes a game.

Cofer will be a much better player as a freshman than Hall was as a senior. Cofer will be a force down low both on offense and defense. May have to teach him how to play his game without fouling, but Stokes has done a good job doing that. For some resin, I think Stokes is likely to stay next year which would really help the team next year.

Would have loved to seen Lyle & Looney on this team next season. Austin may be the bright spot as UT finally gets a true PG. Rebounding appears to be an area of concern looking at this team on paper. Not excited about this lineup, but who knows perhaps Thompson finds a jumps shot, Hubbs can make a consistent shot and one of the other Freshman plays better than anyone expected at this level.

It really depends on how this recruiting class will pan out. If Austin/Cornish/Cofer/Turman do better than what their initial ranking suggest, we could have a decent team.

Austin as a PG > Golden as a PG
(Austin/Thompson as scorers < Golden)
Richardson as a senior > Tatum as a senior
Hubbs as a sophomore > McRae as a sophomore
Moore > Hall (we started Moore over Hall last year)
Cornish > McBee

Can Reese/Pops/Cofer/Turman contribute more than freshmen Stokes? That's the biggest question, can one of those guys step it up next year? It'll be interesting to see.

Maymon before surgery was an animal. The Maymon this year is not the same Maymon we had for his junior year. He has virtually no game besides rebounds and put back baskets. Hard to beat out the old Maymon.

Solid

You dont' have to have the most talented team to win..its about playing together. Maybe next years team gels better. Guess we'll wait and see....

With the way transfers happen now a days a lot could change as well.

How does the perception of next years team change if Stokes returns and we bring in a graduate transfer PG?

Or if Stokes goes pro, if we bring in a graduate transfer big?

I think some discussion, regarding the players coming in versus those that may be exiting, fitting Martin's offense might be as important as rankings.

I've heard Pancrantz say some of the current players, for instance, aren't really suited for the motion offense.

I don't know if that is true, but I'd be interested in thoughts on that general subject.

Excuses are for the incompetent.

I'm assuming Stokes leaves this year. Along with McRae, Maymon and Barton heading out, what are your thoughts of next year's team vs Zo's 1st year? Which team do you think is/was more talented and better prepared for success?

Zo's 1st year:

McRae
Golden
Maymon
Tatum
Hall
McBee
Richardson
Stokes (for only 1/2 year)

Next year:

Richardson
Thompson
Hubbs
Moore
Reese
Cornish
Austin
Cofer
Turman
Ndiaye

Add AJ Davis and Chevious. AJ a key player Chevious no. Expectations would be AJ to bulk up take the center position backup Turman. Four seems to be Cofer, Reese, and Moore could even get time at that position. Richardson becomes more of a scorer. Austin and Thompson should be a good combination at PG. Hubbs the mystery man has to have McRae like numbers learn to play defense. X-factor Cornish he could be surprisingly good player or just a freshman needing work. Nidaye no use even talking about him unless he loses about thirty pounds gains some muscle. We need to add a power forward SEC ready and a three point shooter lock down defender doubt there is anyone out there in JC or elsewhere to shore up this team.

Aj is not and will never be a center. People please stop trying to make him a 4 or 5. That is our problem. We need true post players that can block shots and rebound. Bulking up 6'8 g/fs is not the solution.

I'd take Labron.

Three years ago none of the opposing coaches in the SEC knew the first thing about Zo and his system, so they had an advantage since the talent in place Bruce left was pretty good.

Jordy and Jarnell are top talents. Just exactly who will step into their roles from the remaining roster or incoming freshmen next season? So if he squeaks into the dance this year you get him for 5 years at least. Even if next season is a mess.

What is going to happen long term is you are going to see the real Zo-ball. Having to use Bruce's recruits made him go hybrid, which taxes his coaching abilities. He can only coach one style of play competently, so he has been recruiting to that style. Expect much more of the 62-58 scoring type stuff. More 20-12 seasons in a good year. Yawn.

Stokes is a Zo recruit.

I understand recruiting guys that fit your system but besides Jordy, who is a Bruce guy we depend on?
