Question for the liberals?

Are you still in college or about to start college?

Full time student but I also work full time and support myself. I only take enough in loans to cover tuition and books.

Socially liberal, and I think government welfare programs are good to an extent, such as those who truly can't support themselves (MD, quadriplegic, etc.) and basic needs. I support the idea of free market because competition results in the best outcome for most, but also realize that it's going to result in a portion of people that won't be able to support themselves. Also that some of those who end up made are going to do so by being lying, cheating *******s, so some level of regulation is necessary.

Anyways, limiting the rant. All I've taken is a one-year cycle of college level economics, and a year or so worth of other business classes. I know I don't know a whole lot, but that does make me more educated on the subject that many who try to discuss it.

So that's that.

Additionally, I think our political system is completely broken and we're going to need to turn an aircraft carrier around in the Panama Canal to fix this thing. I don't trust democrats with anything, especially instituting and overseeing any government programs.

I've voted republican and democrat an equal number of times, but more often than not I end up voting for a third party candidate for two reasons: 1. to screw over whichever major candidate I like less, and 2. because I believe a two major party system is fundamentally flawed.

Left of Neocon, Az, gsvol, and joe, so I think that makes me communist fascist.

26, been on my own financially since 19. Been in school most of that time and paying my own way, currently work and attend a private school so I am in no way directly on the government teat. I'm not married but would like to be if I meet the right woman. I am open to kids, but come from a huge family so feel no overwhelming need to have any.

Something that has always struck me as bizarre is how people are held on a pedestal if they have: served in the armed forces, were a firefighter/policeman, have kids, own a business, or are a priest/pastor/whatever. Apparently if I were all of those things, my opinions would be unassailable no matter what.

No offense to anyone who meets any of the above criteria, I just think it's very naive to think those kind of traits make one's experiences and opinions special or more valid than any other educated intelligent person's.

Making a kid is far different than parenting that kid. I do not own a business but have been self-employed for several years. I do think both aspects has changed my viewpoint. Before I had kids I was a fence sitter but had moved conservative ever since but I now think I'm moving again towards libertarian. Believe it or not I'm starting to give up my black and white (I mean hard and distinct contrast - not racial) view of the world and am starting to see more grey areas that I'm accepting of. I could go into detail but won't.

Of all political discussion (or anything, for that matter), the only thing that truly irritates me is people who only deal in black and white. That's a simpleton's view of the world.

no offense but I haven't seen much from you that would lead me to believe this

wondering if I can answer since I wouldn't consider myself a liberal but have been called one numerous times by AZjoevol

I view you as a moderate.

You got some goofy ideas but don't we all?

Are all of you still in college?

It appears all of you are still in school and have yet to step out into the real world and get a job.

Seems as though you might think most people with jobs in the real world are conservative. Don't let the bubble you live in dictate to you as to how it goes everywhere else in the nation.

You would probabaly consider me a liberal because of my views on social issues. Since I graduated from college, I served in the military for six years. Since leaving the military, I have been employed for 17 straight years. Fortunately, I no longer have a mortgage and I am debt free. I pay my cc bills in full each month. I know a great many liberals who have worked very hard and paid their bills just as timely as the conservatives I know.

What exactly is your point?

I think his point is that he thinks (not unlike some others) that liberalism is like a disease of the young and that liberals are all either hippies or welfare mooching drug addicts. Maybe that is extreme but it is the vibe I get sometimes from people on this board.

Actually, very few welfare recipients would be considered true liberals. Just like union workers. They certainly aren't liberal. They may vote democratic because of their union associations, but ideals and stances on most issues is conservative in nature.

One of the great fallacies is that union thugs are a bunch of liberals. As far from the truth as possibly could be.

I've been drug free for over a year, thank you very much.

Nothing wrong with the hippie lettuce unless you just can't handle it. You would be surprised how many successful people from any number of professions use it recreationally. I personally know a bunch of people that do it. At least half of them would identify themselves as republicans. Probably more. I do say though, very few would classify themselves as christian conservatives.

It's all about where it lands on the list of priorities.

I know a ton of Republicans that smoke. It's a recreation that has no boundaries.

This is going to be your catch phrase isn't it? You've used it twice now in less than 35 post. Everyone needs a catch phrase I guess. Atleast you've found yours.

If it applies to the subject at hand, I may use it more than every 17.5th post. :)

It is an accurate assertion more often than not when describing the abundance of posts in these types of message boards. Everyone likes to think the world they live in accurately depicts the rest of the world. Far too often, though, it is not the case.

I'm 47 and have had part-time jobs through college and grad school, took a semester off of law school to work, and am a partner in a law firm employing 11 people. I've worked in restaurants, retail stores (several of them, in fact), read water meters, and on and on.

How DARE you imply that hard working people can never be liberal? You are a toad.

Worked a warehouse job and a grocery store through college. Loaded planes for 7-8 years now I'm a load planner (make sure planes are balanced, figure out takeoff speeds, flap settings, how much weight a plane can carry, and various other things)
I'm 34 married and have a 3 year old daughter
