Question to those who listens to Tony Basilio

Basilio is a legend and a VFL. Some may not like his personality, but his post game shows have walked me off the ledge after some very painful losses over the past 15-20 years and have provided some great ‘group therapy’. He also has a team of hosts that are actually pretty insightful. They also tell it like it is and don’t sugar coat anything. If some of you all want you standard, boring and ‘inside the box shows’ by all means listen to someone else.

Don't forget the many cool things he and his crew do for people, such as getting listeners and sponsors involved in sending the Smoky MTN Children's home kids to a game with dinner and all, hurricane relief for Peggy, treating Roger like a king, the Amache weekend, etc. That dude has always asked how he can help over the last 30 years when he's know about something I had going on. His show has knowledgeable guests like Watson Brown on Wednesdays and Mike H on Fridays . Beano is hilarious. Some other callers being a ton to the table and some are clowns that don't mind being laughed at. Brian and Matt are almost encyclopedic with sports. It's a show for people who don't take this stuff or themselves too seriously. Definitely not for everyone, but I think the hate Tony gets is comical. He does it how he wants to do it, take it or leave it, and it's fine if you leave it, but he's one of the best dudes around and would do anything for you, do I don't understand the personal animosity towards the guy.

I'll take it over some of the other options like the guys in the afternoon on 99.1 who enjoy flatulence jokes and innuendos like high school sophomores, the guy in the morning who tells everyone how dumb they are, the guy in the afternoon who always tells us how he discovered Dalton Knecht and covered the Big Ten in Iowa, etc etc.

However, I think we have several local options that offer a variety and all bring good stuff to the table, I just like some more than others. (I try not to listen to too much of any of it, tbh)All do some good stuff in the community, and all have solid guests on. The 99.1 guys get Low, Price, and Hubbs so that's hard to beat, but Tony has some guests on that do more national coverage. One cool things Tony does is have guys on who cover upcoming opponents. So, I enjoy them all at times and also have to turn them all off at times. I guess I like the informality and humor of Basilio more than others, but Josh Ward makes me laugh.

It’s crazy to me when someone like Calhoun who looks like he can’t bench press over 135 lbs or run a 40 time under 6 seconds is allowed to talk sports in any capacity as a profession.
I don't know who Calhoun is,but I don't think you have to be an athlete, former athlete, or a strapping individual to talk or know about sports.

If you’re doing it as a profession, I think you should have some type of experience in sports in some capacity to do it if you’re gonna dog the players on the team you cover like Calhoun. Some type of high school experience hell even rec youth league or even just being somewhat athletic. For someone like him, who from what I can tell has only watched and in no capacity has done or can do at any level, critiquing players and coaches is like someone who likes rockets but has no idea about aerospace engineering, calculus, or even basic algebra telling NASA how to fly to the moon/mars and how they were doing it before was wrong while getting paid to do it. It’s not like he’s bringing valuable insight or insider information to Off the Hook’s viewers. He just complains about players and coaches in a very arrogant way.

This is just another post from a Hooker follower to try and discredit Tony. Tony has been a resource for over 20 years.
You're about as wrong as anyone could possibly be on this forum! My post was of genuine concern for Tony! Not an invitation for people to come in here and act like a bunch of jackasses and then have the unmitigated gall to blame me for their terrible behavior, for simply having the "audacity" to create the thread in the first place! If you have no insight on the matter, or you don't listen to Tony's show, I see no reason for the haters to come in here and open their gaping maws on the matter! Just move on and ignore the thread. Matter of fact, mods just close the damn thing! I gave this place far too much credit to think they could set aside petiness for once and be respectul.

Brent Hubbs endorses this message
Hubbs tells you what he’s told to he can tell you.

I listen to TB most days. I enjoy the Monday & Friday shows with Beano. He keeps TB from going off the ledge. I enjoy Wednesdays with Watson Brown. Thursdays with Adams are painful so I usually bail those days. TB went total loco on Nico before the season. Now he constantly trashes the guy to make up.

I really do hope I'm worrying over nothing. It's just something I've observed over the last few months, that's all. I get that much of this is a normal byproduct of age. I'm 53 and I get my own two boy's names mixed up a lot. But the difference is I am aware when I do it and correct myself. Many times Tony doesn't even seem to be aware of it, and doesn't correct himself. THAT is the part that's concerning to me. Just a concerned fan, that is all.

I haven’t noticed that, but will have to pay closer attention now that you mentioned that. Maybe it’s where there’s been so much much going on with the football team in the playoffs and portal drama and the basketball team ramping things up and all the things going on with the holidays. I know his show isn’t for everyone, but he and the guys on the show seem like good folks that try to help those in need in the community, and are just common fans of the Vols like us, and don’t take themselves too seriously like some other sports talk shows do. I wonder if the caller NegaDave is a member on here? He’s been on a roll here lately, and would fit right in with many of those posts here the past couple weeks, especially. I know he’s chomping at the bit to be the first caller when the basketball team loses their first game this season.

I haven’t listened to TB since he was the ring announcer at SAE Boxing Tournament in the late 90’s.
