Quite possibly the most perfectly executed play in Vol History

Quite possibly the greatest call of a play in Mr. Wards storied career. I am 56 and just got cold chills hearing that for probably the five hundredth time. 😀
And the part I like about that call wasn't included in this clip. "He went ROARING down the greensward", OK I'll confess, I never used the word greensward in my life, and Ward's call was the first I ever heard of it. I had to look it up, (being just a simple guy). ONLY John Ward, a true scholar, gentleman, VFL and with a law degree as well could throw that term into one of his classic calls.

John Ward's complete Call of Jeff Powell's 1986 Sugar Bowl Run against Miami

A Host of Volunteers, The show about Jeff Powell, and specifically what led up to this monster play.

I remember that play very well. I was in the stands and on the end where he blasted into the end zone. Granted, our seats for the band weren't the best in the world in the stadium, but it looked awesome on the diamond vision screen. Benny Blades was supposed to be the fastest player in college at the time and Jeff Powell made him look like he was running in quicksand.

Someone who was alive at the time.. give me your thoughts going into this game
I was at the game. Miami had all the pub and most of the athletes (supposedly). Most sports people thought we were going to get stomped. The cried was 90% UT and was crazy. The fans never let up and neither did the team.

talking about it at breakfast today. I bet every player on the field got a 100 grade.

What a game. I was in the 8th grade - my dad took me to my first UT game the year before against Memphis St along with my Grandpa who was from Oliver Springs. That game was the precipice to my fandom. I literally tackled my father on that Powell run in our living room. We dominated the U that day. One of my greatest moments as a fan.

And yes. Clinical blocking on that play OP.

I notice on all these great plays, our blocking was superb.
We had several guys blocking 2 defenders each.

I just watched the Sugar Bowl vs Miami and it is weird seeing how far Testaverde dropped back. And weird to see how awful his mechanics were. He was pressured on most plays, but even left unmolested, his throwing was the worst I can remember.
That Sugar Bowl offense and defense were some physical players.

And I had forgotten how much acceleration Powell had. From standing to sprint in about 2 feet.
I watched UT play UCLA and Auburn, then Miami on TV. The rest of what I saw was thanks to John Ward.
