Ok, I took a deeper look at the Tennessee offense in the game Saturday.

It's really different first of all.

They almost always stack receivers AND they split them outside of the numbers. That's two receivers outside of the numbers on each side. What does that mean?

1. It's hard to adjust zone coverages to that alignment because you have to account for the space outside of the numbers right at the snap. That's almost backwards logic for defense.

2. When in man coverage, there is no way not to do one of two things: Leave open spaces in the middle of the field or take defenders out of the box. There's so much that goes into lining up with Tennessee.. OH and on top of that, they snap the ball every 20 seconds.

3. They just run the two-man combo routes on both sides a lot of times. Sometimes they have different ones going on both sides. It is probably a lot on the QB sometimes, but it helps receivers get open in my opinion.
Hooker gets a lot of the credit btw.

It definitely helps when your QB has a howitzer arm.

Ready to see Georgia match up with them.

In case you wondered if this was SEC specific this is Michigan.....again Michigan who boat raced Penn State

Tennessee is legit, as much as it pains me to say it. They are really fast. That being said, I think they'd have a tough time with our run game.

Continue to be amazed at the amount of football ignorance on this board.

It is great to be a passionate fan, but sometimes you have to take the shades off.

You put Tennessee and Michigan on the same field right now, Tennessee wins.

Their offense is legit. QB is elite. Their defense is suspect. It’s a close game.

UT had 12 or Bama? That would have been a pretty big deal.
A sub situation I think…it was UT (Bama did it too earlier I believe)
It was for a second before AL called time out.. no play in motion.. they called time out before refs could throw flag or see it, so technically Bama bailed us out on that one lol .. sucks to be them

These are all quotes from our rivals and their message boards. All of them paid boards where the investment is a little higher, and some of the posts a hair more thought out. I will start with Bama, but I want to be crystal clear the entire SEC and all our normal daunting rivals are scratching their heads at how we are doing what we are doing. No need to beat our chests or claim some superiority at this point. As Heupel pointed out today, we still have a lot to accomplish. But folks it feels really good to be 6 games in and people comparing our offense to 2019 LSU.

Bama

One of my faves where a Bama poster is breaking down our game after rewatch

Really enjoying this thread.

Thank you.

Here is a quote from a rival on a private gator forum. You Vols are the real deal this year. I am happy for you. Your dry spell and bad luck against UF has been a real trial. I hope you beat the dog shttt out of Georgia and win the SEC title and go on and rep the SEC in a title game. Ive followed SEC and gator football since 1965. The pendulum has finally swung your way and to a very deserving fan base. Gator fans are ready to fire the new coaches (much like always) SOS spoiled many and Urban did too. Respect from me for sure. btw Satan and bama has been getting homer calls for years...........phkkkk them.

I hate to say it but Florida has pretty awesome fans. When I went to Knoxville, they were the only fan base that came out to our kicks outs and partied with us pre-game. It sucks we always tend to lose to them but there fans were never turds about it.

They are only cocky because they don’t play Bama in the regular season this year, and they are like EVERY other fan base we’ve faced as of yet in thinking TN isn’t any good without watching. It’s funny how everyone can see the results(not watching anything), and just assume somehow TN is the same TN as always, I guess just getting lucky. Just look to every week so far where they use the whole, yeah TN beat a down/terrible FL, LSU, and Pitt. And now it’s a Bama got screwed by the reffs. The endless excuses that are manufactured by people is amazing

All this while ignoring that most other teams, in some cases their own team, hasn’t played anyone of value, but they don’t consider that criticism in evaluated how good their team is.

Yeah, on other boards and I am keeping my mouth shut and just waiting. No one is quite taking us as a serious threat to Georgia. It is ok. Need to get by Kentucky first anyways.

In what way was it generous toward UT? I remember 3 calls that I've seen Bama posters point to. One was a possible facemask in a still shot. I do not know if it was pulled or not. Two was the PI at the end... which was textbook PI. That wasn't a questionable call whatsoever. The last and probably best argument was the potential targeting by Omari. It was nowhere near as flagrant as the uncalled shot on Hooker last year... but it could have gone against UT and still been a reasonable call.

They got away with other PIs. They got away with offensive holding. I'm not seeing how that game was generous to UT. At the very, very best it was roughly even to UT. But the worst call of the game by far was the PI in the end zone that kept them alive in the game.
100% agree. It was roughly even, but I think the officiating still was a little generous to Bama. However, this was a much more even called game than Bama games of past. Can’t remember what number, maybe 65 on Bama, was holding constantly. Not to mention that ridiculous PI call that gave them 4 points. Listening to Bama fans complain about officiating instead of taking a deeper look at their undisciplined team is music to my ears

It is truly amazing that they think they got the worse end of missed calls. That PI in the end zone alone kept them in the game at a critical point. During UT's mid-game drought, Keyton was held on the play where Hooker overthrew him. Numerous times UT defenders had their jerseys stretched from behind as they tried to press the pocket.

I'm grateful it was as close to being even as it was. It is usually MUCH worse in favor of Bama.
Look at Hyatt's last TD and watch the DB come flying in and head shot him while he was on the ground. Classic targeting. Wasn't flagged or reviewed or mentioned.

More comparisons to 2019 LSU folks

Halfway through the season, we have scored 3 less touchdowns, have around 350 less yards and 2 more turnover than 2019 LSU.

The similarities are there. They probably had a slightly better D.

Edit - I wonder what the sooner boards are saying?

I agree. Bama laments their mistakes, but if you subtract ours then we blow them out walking away.
The fumbled handoff, which led to the scoop and score and a 49-42 lead for them, was an unforced error, unlike any other play our offense has made this season. That was a gift and a really cheap touchdown for them at a critical moment... They were lucky to be in the game at the end. The better team won. PERIOD.

I do think the fumble being whistled dead for forward progress was pretty quick and the PI at the end of the game where they intercepted the ball was generous. I’ve both seen that called many times and seen it not called many times. Had the situation been reversed we would all be absolutely livid over that PI call. Don’t get me wrong, it was PI. It was just a weak call in a critical moment.

He had pushed a WR down twice already in the game that wasn’t called. I think that 3rd being at such a critical moment was all the ref needed.

It was late but I wouldn't have called that targeting. I thought the same thing when I first saw it but I don't think it was.

I do think LSU had more talent and a better overall defense. I believe we have a better scheme, and I would say Hooker is playing as well as Joe B was that year.

This doesn’t feel right.

I was not believing the guy who sat behind me. He was an uga fan wearing a UT shirt and was very vocal for UT the whole game. He even sang Rocky Top! He came with two buddies who were Vol fans. The guy seemed legitimately excited about watching bama get beat and said he hated them more than anybody. He remained confident about winning in Athens. I could never wear another school's colors or cheer or them.

They are riding their own high. No one benefited more from our win than them. There were posts that our beat down of LSU woke LSU up too which is their current focus.

This exchange was funny. The fact us getting punished was brought up could only be because of our success. They also have a thread about how Lane was watching our game too. I think they struggle with that relationship the way we do with Pearl.

As someone who was OUTRAGED that LSU basketball was never punished for Wade's "strong-a$$ offer; why do we give Tennessee football a pass for the crap that got Pruitt fired?

Cheating is legal now. Donate to the Grove Collective so we can remain competetive in that arena.

They have a thread making fun of the Gumps whining to Finebaum
The refs was out to get us Paaaawwwwl!

Well they are accustomed to the refs helping them in every single close game so they had no idea what was happening when the refs actually made calls that went against them. The refs handed them the A&M game so they shouldn't be whining

Commenting about our win.
For them means as much as it did to us when we beat them in 2014. I hate that they are back man. They will be insufferable.

Yes, even Danielson said that was offensive PI called against us. Props to the bammer WR for knowing how to cheat, he was trained by the Master of Cheating and the Keebler Elf in Charge himself, Nick Saban. But yeah we can throw that one right back at them. Had that been properly called we win by a couple scores maybe.

And while I am at it, having now gone back and rewatched the entire game at a leisurely pace, neither Nesller nor Danielson disagreed with any of the PI calls on bammer. Looking at the video it was obvious to anyone not wearing that ugly shade of crimson.

You know, it might just be that if your secondary is getting burned all day, they might jump the gun a bit and get a few PI calls. I mean...ya think?:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D

We were on the bad side of “forward progress” during the Ole Miss game last year.

I’ve heared the same and seen a still photo but I also heared it was before the ball was snapped and that they got the 12th guy off the field

If you go rewatch it Bama calls a time out. Our whole team can be on the field pre snap. There is no flag for to many men until the ball is snapped. So by taking the T.O. they prevented the penalty.

As a Vol fan, I consider myself lucky, after the last 15 years, I finally get to switch back to Bourbon. :D:D

Hooker gets a lot of the credit btw.
One of these statements is not true... the howitzer arm is actually on the bench.
