Given Chicago's murder rate and gun death issues - an overwhelming majority of which have involved people of African heritage and the neighborhoods in which they are a majority - one might deduce that pursuit of charges against Jussie Smollett could be imprudent at this juncture. The Chicago PD gained public sympathy for its prompt dedication of significant resources in response to Smollett's report, and the subsequent revelation of the hoax and its purported purpose. Going after Smollett could flip that into public anger which could quickly escalate into civic unrest. Leaving Smollett with a tarred reputation may be the smarter play.

I can agree with this with a caveat; All money he makes from any paid appearances/interviews for the next 5 years, and any and all money made by him from books/movies that include this incident, be forfeited to a charity not of his choosing.

Charles Barkley didn’t seem very angry. Plus Smollett and his supporters feel vindicated.

The Mayor and the Police Chief aren't too happy with the DA's office declining to prosecute Smollett. Apparently, they were not consulted. Among other things, they claim that Smollett's actions and the DA's decision not to prosecute Smollett weaken the future enforcement of the hate crimes law. They note Smollett's forfeiture of bond does not approach th cost to the city of investigating his false claims. In essence, they are righteously ticked off.
