Rant central

Well, the coaches did change out one of the players in my original rant and so far, so good in terms of results. ZD was (and is) still the league leader in strikeouts and was replaced by Trammell in left and also Evan Russell at DH. Both contributed big time to our win last night. Now just move Santiago to DH and give another catcher a shot defensively. They cannot do worse than what we are seeing now. Last night was another prime example of him almost costing us the game.

Personally, I'd like to see Russell behind the plate in a midweek game. He looks the part of a gamer.....

Disclosure: I've never seen him behind the plate, just getting off the bus.

zach, i am pleased to say the Vols have been more competitive in the SEC than i expected. However, it seems like they have just enough good pitching to have a chance to win the first game of an SEC series and stay competitive in the second one. However, what is left over for the weekday series are getting pounded by mediocre mid major teams.

I sure hope I am wrong but I still think it will be a huge struggle to make it to the first day of Hoover.

I guess Vanderbilt has the same trouble then. Lost to mighty Eastern Kentucky midweek last week and then lost to an 8-12 Belmont team this week. We had a midweek game where we gave up 1 run, then had a midweek shutout before giving up runs to ETSU this week.

I think it is too early to tell....

I'm all for facility upgrade/expansion conversations however consistently winning a few more games must come first.....Florida's park is awful and they just won a Natty, it can be done with less than desired facilities.

Not getting political however its sort of like the education debate, just throwing money at an issue isn't necessarily going to fix anything......

Best chance to jump ahead in the stadium race is sharing a stadium with the Smokies which I believe has to be under consideration. Randy Boyd will be looking for as many tenants as possible for his Old City stadium and Vol baseball would give him 3 additional months of events to drive people to his Old City properties before or after the games.

I see the softball team moving from the sewer plant and railroad tracks to Lower Hudson site. They need the space and to be closer to campus. Pulling in the fences for softball would allow more seating and stuff behind the walls.

Moving UT baseball to Old City Stadium would also bring more casual fans to the UT games and would also mean much of the cost would be paid by someone else. Can you imagine walking down to Jig & Reel before or after a March baseball game? Good times to be sure?

Bama sweep...nuff said. Give it some time before fahring Butch again. I’m not totally discounting the OPs comments but, isn’t this a young team with a new coach. Gotta give the coach some time.

when CTV gets things going around here, which I'm overly optimistic he will, facility upgrades will come.........IMO

They've sunk too much into that crappy stadium. Would take a monumental change to get a new stadium.

Thanks now I'm really hoping this happens and am probably going to be disappointed after we eventually don't

Woowooowooo! I like the new coaches and hope they are here for years. Just pointing out some obvious things for anyone that has watched this team. They must be seeing it too because they changed the number one suggestion this week and it worked great. You cannot keep playing a .170 batter that leads the league in strikeouts. Hopefully the other suggestions will work out too.

I really think CTV made good hires in Josh and Ross,,all the kids seem to like them from what i can tell,,they do a good job instructing with the players on the bases and in the dugout.. And Coach Anderson is just what I thought ,,the perfect fit for the pitchers,,He's done a great job with them,,And to think he was the Head Coach at Okie State where they out hit everyone...He was a great Hire IMO,,,and to have JP in the dugout is huge also and Helton in the background. I can see this program growing fast and as of now, its moving in the right direction...Keep it up CTV....Go Vols!!!!!!

Much of the changes would be usable.

But if given use of a fairly free stadium nearby, why not? Could use LNS for practice facility if nothing else.

the bulk of the stadium is 25 years old. now.

I wonder if it would be a large enough lot for indoor track facility?

Would probably end up as part of the football facility somehow.

This^^^^^

Until the baseball program starts winning consistently, it's going to be highly unlikely to see a stadium/facility upgrade.

In the VQ War Room tonight it was said that Fulmer toured the baseball facilities this week seeing what upgrades or renovations might be needed.

Pitching: usually good enough to stay in a game. Starters have been pretty good, relievers, to me, look very good. What’s up with Schultz not staying in longer when he is having success?
Hitting; needs big time improvements
Fielding: avg to below avg*.
*santiago way below average! Cost us again last night vs SC. There were a couple wild pitches but most SEC catchers at least block those, he never does. How many balls just bounce out of his glove?! One guarantee when that happens is that those pitches will NOT be called strikes. He is hurting this team. Now that his hitting has been exposed in SEC play he cannot make up for his fielding weaknesses. I overheard one of the coaches yell in a scrimmage earlier this spring, “you better get a lot of RBIs, ‘cause you sure as hell aren’t a catcher!” He was right.

I don't get the Benny hate. I only caught a few innings, but there was a wild pitch he had no chance at, and he came up in an RBI situation and ripped one just happened to be right at second baseman.

He had a couple bad luck strokes last night, but he still has a tendency to swing at everything that's within a 20 foot radius of the plate. And he's far from being a great defensive catcher.

That being said, he's the best option we've got, and I don't believe he's been bad enough to get replaced.

Hmmm......to start, how about this:
* third in the conference in number of strikeouts
* second in the conference in passed balls
* first in stolen bases against
** he is tied for the league lead in doubles, so that is great. Also, don’t “hate” him just pointing out facts.
