Rating our Head Coaches

I’ve only been watching UT football since 2010 and didn’t really become a die hard fan until 2014, so giving Heupel anything below an A- just doesn’t compute with me. This team gave me absolutely nothing of value until Heupel. Since Heupel, we’re winning 9 games a year and beating Bama and Florida consistently again.

Wow. Talk about the worst time to start watching!!! Your only point of reference prior to Heupel is the 3 stooges? Makes sense you would rate Heupel an A. If CJH goes deep into the playoffs this year, I might bump him to an A. For now I see about 4-5 games that were very poorly managed that we had no business losing. He’s had some ‘’highs” too no doubt.

It’s been rough lol.

I’m gonna say something people probably won’t like to hear. But it’s the truth, based on the facts. Teams pretty much always lose a WTF game or 2. You only get a guaranteed 12 of these a year and every opponent, especially conference opponents and especially conference opponents on the road, will fight tooth and nail to beat you. The losses are inevitable. Fulmer lost a ton of games we had no business losing (How about Memphis ‘96? And I could find a bunch more.). So did Majors (How about Bama ‘90? And I could find a bunch more.). I’m sorry to say, but 9-3 to me is a good record at UT given our all time record (which equates to about 8-4) and lack of instate talent base. 10-2 is exceptional. 11 or more is unbelievable. That’s just how I see it. There’s only a few programs in the country that consistently win double digit games and they all have better instate talent than UT. Obviously, when you enter the season, the goal is to win every game and beat everyone you’re better than. But it just doesn’t happen a lot.

I grew up in the Fulmer Era so I can't judge any coaches prior to him. I would assume multiple natty's get you an A+. 1 natty is an A, SEC title is a B+, and so on.
Fulmer- A (Has a natty & multiple SEC titles)
Kiffin- I (body of work was incomplete)
Dooley- F (tenure set the program back)
Jones- C- (underachieved)
Pruitt- F (tenure set the program back)
Heupel- B (SEC title gets him a B+, Natty gets him to the A status)

Seems a little low for Phillip. I think he at least earns a B+.

Dooley and Pruitt: F
Jones: D-
Sorry but a Natty should get you an A. The year after Peyton graduated. I’m not sure anyone expected it Most coaches never get one and very few almost never repeat with very FEW exceptions like Saban and Smart. They don’t grow on trees for sure

Al Wilson gets an A+ for the 98 Natty.

Took us to a bowl game his first year. Got Jonathon Crompton drafted.
Lost in embarassing fashion to a lousy Ole Miss team two days after his prize recruit Nukeese Richardson "held up" a Pilot Gas Station with a toy gun. Got embarrassed in the bowl game. Lost games to UCLA and Auburn that should have been won.

OTOH, did have a winning record (but come on, it was 7-5) and beat uga in convincing fashion (better) and almost beat bammer (impressive though there "is no such thing as a moral victory"). Even against bammer though, he ran 30+ seconds off the clock to allow an injured kicker to attempt from 43 yards, who had missed 4 straight attempts from greater than 40 but hit everything under. Should have tried to get five more yards, and had time to do it!

In short, he did okay but tends to be overated.

I would give him a C+, best case. Definitely not an F.
