Realistically, who should replace Holly?

This is a sad situation. If Holly can't even get a hold of the locker room, there is no way she can demand excellence on the court. It seems as if maybe this team has tuned her out. Seems like she has lost this team. This may be a very bad season for the Lady Vols.

If locker room malcontent is a reality here, it is a sad situation for Holly and while not excusing failure to deal with it as much as possible (again, IF that's part of the current problems), it would lend more sympathy for the coach. Not that a coaching change still might not be needed, but sometimes a coach can only do so much to overcome inter-squad personality clashes (speaking from personal experience). Still, it reflects on the coaching staff if they (1) fail to address the problem; (2) recruit too many "problem" athletes; (3) fail to take the risk into account if accepting players who might display this tendency in high school.

No coach can control everything that happens...and no coach can know everything about his/her players just based upon recruiting contact (if that was the case, then TENN wouldn't have missed out on some all-time greats who wanted badly to come to UT... Duke AA & WNBA star Alana Beard comes to mind). But coaches have to be able to deal with that, especially given the fact that they're stuck with some of these problems for four years.

Kyra Elzy i would give her a shot i think she would be a better coach then Holly, Also she has more fire and would get in the players face like Pat did. Holly is to soft not her style.
:clapping:Kyra Elzy was one of the best UT defensive players ever and is totally responsible for the defensive play of Kentucky when coaching there. Supposedly she is a good recruiter too. Our lack of recruiting success may be beyond the recruiting talent of Elzy and rest elsewhere. The Lady Vols seem to have success with the part times they play full court press (Elzy), but just quit for no apparent reason. Why"

Holly lacks presence, gravitas, weight, or seriousness - call it whatever you want. That's more an observation than a criticism. I think Mad and Amb are generally correct that Holly needs to find her own path or formula. Maybe she has, I don't know, but if so, it's not been very successful.

of HW--and I really wonder at bottom how much the players respect her. Toughness alone is not the most important quality a coach needs. It might be one facet of a good leader--someone who knows and can teach the fundamentals, someone who commands respect by the way they communicate with and handle the team (individually and as a group); someone who can motivate and discipline; someone who is demanding in a positive way; and someone who wins. Players notice the outcomes of games, too. Geno is tough in the sense of being very demanding--and his teams are VERY fundamental. We are NOT fundamental. This is a big leadership job, and HW had never led a team before taking this job. It shows.

No, none of the Pat tree should be considered. She was a terrible offensive coach outside of the Al Brown years. The program requires offensive innovation.

This is just wrong. Tennessee never looked better on offense than they did in 1989 with Gordon, Charles, Melissa McCray and Frost. That was long before Al Brown was here (95-02) and Pat's most complete team.

That team was bigger and better than everyone it played. There was little offensive strategy to what they did, outside of Gordon being possibly the most athletic and diverse individual offensive player up to that point in the women's game (besides Cheryl Miller, maybe). Go watch an old video. Frost and Charles threw the ball back and forth at the backboard until it went in the basket. They were bigger and tougher than anyone they played and just rebounded until one of them scored. There was no ingenuity to that team's game plans. That is actually the offense that it appears Holly is most trying to reproduce.

I think Rueck from Oregon State would be a great coach at Tennessee. With a male coach with no UT ties, it would symbolically be a complete break from the Summitt era and he's an all around good coach.

Tennessee will always be Tennessee but it would probably be wise to offer recruits something different besides what SC and UGA are offering with Staley and Mitchell. I think Mitchell is going to have UGA rolling soon.
