Realistically who would we beat? CFP

I think on any given Saturday, we could beat any team. However, I don't think we are yet in a position where we could win 4 in a row, which is what we would need to do to win a national championship.

Just thinking through the playoff teams ahead of us or potentially in and how we match up.

I’m categorizing this in : Should beat meaning we’re the better team.. could beat meaning we’re just as talented and it would be a solid game- and might be tough meaning I don’t think we match up well.. I don’t think anyone this year is clearly a dominate team:

Have beat: Bama

Should beat: Penn State, Boise State, Indiana, Miami/SMU, BYU/Colorado,
Notre Dame

Could beat: Bama again, Texas, Ohio state, ole miss (almost put them in the would be tough category)

Would be tough : Georgia, Oregon

Of course doing all of this back to back on the road is a ridiculous task but I think we’re better than 6 of the field, have beat one- and match up well with 10 of the field realistically- none of them are unbeatable though.

What’s everyone else’s thoughts?
I think we could beat Kansas City, Arizona, and probably the Pittsburgh Steelers. The college teams just aren’t with our effort to try hard. That’s why we’re failing- just don’t recognize the competition as being worth giving a good 40% effort.

We aren't beating Ala again unless it's at home. Ole Miss would be a really bad matchup on a neutral field. We could beat anybody at home. On a neutral site or at their house I'm not sure there's many we could beat, especially with how stagnant our offense has been.

We are NOT better than Ole Miss. They are better defensive ( based off stats), better at QB, OL and WR. We are better at RB. DL we are even. On a neutral field or in Oxford, we would get our doors blown off. They would be a horrible matchup. The others are beatable on a neutral field. Although I'm not sure ND would be a good matchup either. The D is physical as hell and would own our Oline. Not sure they could score much on us though. Could easily be one of those 14-10 or 17-13 type games.

We SHOULD smoke any of the big 12 or ACC teams that make it. Same with Big 10 outside of Ohio State or Oregon, although I’m not sure how good either of those teams really are. We should at least have a chance against SEC teams depending on whether or not our pedestrian offensive game plan is used.

None of them, if we play as passively as we've been playing. All of them if we play as aggressively as the 2022 team.
Problem is this offense doesn't possess that ability this season. O is who they are. If Vols gonna make a playoff run the defense will need to elevate to an even higher level.

Not on a neutral field. At home, absolutely. We wouldn't beat Ala, Oregon, Ohio St, Ole Miss nor GA on a neutral field or at their place.

We can beat anyone. But many of them can beat us as well. My point there wasn't that we're unbeatable but that on a neutral field we can beat anyone. And you're crazy if you think we have no chance against those teams. There is no dominant team in college football this year. Everyone at the top has flaws and has looked vulnerable at times this year.

The offense possesses the ability to not be a) ridiculously predictable, and b) stupidly conservative. We've played aggressively at times times this year with great success; we've played passively with no success. If you're going to lose, you go down swinging. Doing what you do, not something you're not designed for.

Makes me sick to see Penn state get so much love with James freakin Franklin on the sideline… where is that coming from? Best win was what- Illinois? They don’t exactly get the oh so important “style” points either.
Oh I agree. They’ll likely host a game and get bounced by a SEC team.

I wouldn't bet we could beat or lose to anyone honestly this team is not consistent enough to swing any way, if you think any of these are sure wins or losses you're insane

We will have to agree to disagree. The Vols D is one of the best in the country, mainly due to the deepest DL rotations in the country. The failure to get pressure on Beck was not due to personnel, but due to a defensive scheme that did not put pressure on Beck. Bama's D line put pressure on him in the1st half. UK put pressure on him the entire game. Ole Miss sacked him 5 times. Tell me our D-line is not better than Bama's or UK's and probably better than Ole Miss considering depth. Conclusion: the defensive scheme was the reason we lost that game. I'm a HUGE Banks fan, but this was a bad game plan due to a lack of stunts and blitzes.

On a neutral field, the Vols could beat all of the above. They could also lose to a few of them.

No matter what happens, I am pleased with how the Vols are coming back from the Pruitt disaster era. CJH has revived UT and has the Vols on the right path. Championships are coming. No doubt about it.

It's of course very unlikely that we could string together 4 straight wins, but we can play with anybody. The Georgia game gave me confidence in that, as we will not have a game that tough again. With every intangible favoring the Dawgs, we were in the thick of it until the final two minutes. I still believe the offense is on the verge of putting it together, but time is almost out.

Don't see a 'playoff run' happening at all. IF we get in it will an 11 or 12 seed. We could win 1st game depending on matchup but would then have to play 1st or 2nt seed and we are done. No way our pedestrian offense keeps up with Oregon. Yes the D is good but they can't hold every team to 17 points and hope the O can score 20 in the one half of FB they decide to play.

It's one thing to make mistakes, it's another to have a bad game plan and not make adjustments.
I agree that we should have changed and brought more pressure in the second half. It’s these reactionary fans who think they know something about the game being overly critical of a coach that’s done well this year that drives me mad
