Alligators in general. Symbol of Florida’s racist past. And for years they’ve used it. They’re irredeemable and must shut down. Outside of that they will continue to remind us of their hateful legacy. All based on some ridiculous folklore from over 100 years agoThe biggest issue I have with stuff like this is that the context doesn't matter. It would be different, totally different, if this chant drew inspiration from this piece of "folklore" about black babies being used as alligator bait. However, it did not. Lawrence Wright popularized/came up with it in the mid-90s as a figure of speech about defeating their opponents (their opponents were "bait" for the Gators). If the gator bait chant is supposed to be offensive, then isn't the gator chomp, or the gator name itself, offensive? I mean, you can claim that all of it hearkens back to the time when black babies were used as alligator bait...
Thank you! The two goofballs on the sports animal this morning were attempting to defend why we should be OK giving to the national BLM organization despite many of the local chapters promoting anti semitic positions.https://247sports.com/college/tennessee/Article/Tennessee-Vols-Football-Tee-Martin-expands-on-Tennessees-idea-to-auction-black-jerseys-148336056/
“We’re going to find an organization within our community to support. We never talked about donating to that particular organization, nor will we do that. We’ve looked at giving back to the community in Knoxville, and we haven’t found that organization yet. That’s as far as that has gone so far.”

I knew we have men of integrity behind this, I'll start saving my money to bid.
The first article you quoted (Snopes) doesn’t seem to believe it happened. Idk if you read through it or not, but they seem very skeptical.
That is the salient point here. There's no context applied to any of this. There’s no shortage of images and “folklore” about the alleged practice of using black babies to lure and trap alligators, and as another poster stated, slaves were allowed and encouraged to breed freely...sometimes the slave master participated too. So sacrificing a couple babies for a couple skinned alligators was worth the investment.
Based on the amount of images and information, I tend to believe it actually happened. You’re free to disagree with that.
What all this has to do with UF’s gator bait chant is another issue completely. Anyone suggesting our chant is directly connected to the alleged practice of feeding babies to alligators needs their heads examined.
The slippery slope is now turning into a cliffThat is the salient point here. There's no context applied to any of this.
Like someone else said in this thread, I bet tracking dogs like Smokey were used to hunt down fugitive slaves. Does Smokey need to go? It's basically the exact same thing as what Florida just did. Do the New England Patriots need to go? After all, what they ultimately were fighting for was the establishment of a country, part of which allowed for slavery. You can do this kind of thing all day to the point where virtually any team name, even something innocuous like "Tigers" could be seen as offensive.

Many disagree, but I think context matters here. If "gator bait" was adopted as a chant precisely because of the folklore around it, then by all means get rid of it. But that isn't what occurred.
I'd like to agree with you, but it's been heading this way for a long time. You start off with the more obvious ones, the low hanging fruit if you will, and when you get some victories you keep going and going. All this is telling me is the country needs to hurry up and get back to work because we clearly have way too much time on our hands these days.
