NAACP Branch Readies for Confederate Flag Fight - Local News | News Articles | National News | US News - FOXNews.com

First off its not the flag of the confederacy, it was a battle flag.

Is the NAACP really gonna try to fight this battle?
why would they not take up this fight? Nothing good can come from waving that flag. We're not commemorating anything by allowing it to continue waving.

The NAACP is essentially a worthless outfit that fits in the Jesse Jackson camp of whining for equality, but this is one fight where they make some sense.

yah, but does someone have the right to say you cannot fly that flag? With the NASCAR fanbase trying to push this issue is gonna cause way more problems then fix IMO

no, they shouldn't have the right to force anyone to stop displaying things. They don't have the right, except in gov't sponsored or funded activities / buildings. This one won't qualify, but their argument makes sense this time.

you ever notice that the Native Americans never raise a stink about the American Flag. Historically that should be very offensive to them...

America still exists and stands for much more than a fight over an abhorrent slave trade.

if you wanna see a confederate national flag, look either at the current GA flag, or missisippi flag

Oh yeah I know. I was a history major in college, and I admit. I was never taught that until then. I was never a confederate flag waving guy, but just made me laugh at the idiots flying it.

to state that it was about anything else is simply an effort to mask reality.

well in the northern states, slavery wasnt abundant because it made no sense economically, why spend thousands on slaves when you have tons of irish immigrants that are basically disposable and you pay an extreme fraction of the cost for. The south didnt really have that kind of labor pool.
At the outset of the Civil War Robert E. Lee freed all his slaves, Lincoln had to force Grant to release his slaves at the issue of the Emancipation Proclimation. The Emancipation Proclomation itself didnt free slaves in the north, only in reconqured southern territories. The civil war had been brewing for several years, it should have broken out several years before because of the Nullification Crisis, however Andrew Jackson handled that situation. Is what pushed everything over the top was the election of Lincoln when he wasnt on any Ballots in the south. When that happened the southern states had believed they had lost their political efficacy, and therefore began to secceed.

This is a very short undetailed explanation. I have a 45 page paper on the topic that i wrote in my undergrad.

This gets at the heart of the matter. Flags are symbols. The fact that so many people view the flag as the flag of the confederacy essentially confers that meaning on it.

I don't care if some one wants to display it but it really has no place in government or public venues.

but if it comes to a point where that would cause more of a problem then it would fix?

had the South not been an agrarian economy and many of the influential folks in the South not owned and traded in slaves for their entire lives, the Civil War would never have happened. The states rights argument simply doesn't exist without the slave trade. Lincoln's election simply cemented for the South that they were outnumbered and weren't going to ever change minds in DC. Their argument about decentralized authority makes a lot of sense, but it isn't something we would have gone to war over.

if the NAACP boycots nascar do you really think it will hurt their sales and what not?

also think about how much hell that will raise with the fanabse if that is really pushed
1. No. How else do you suggest that the NAACP get publicity in its fight over the Rebel flag?

2. Who cares? Why does the fanbase care? That flag on the track has absolutely nothing to do with the race.

What's the big deal?

NASCAR can't stop fans from flying a flag they want to fly. Likewise, if people are offended by a flag then they have the right to protest it.

Both groups exercising their First Amendment rights.

i see your point, and that make some sense. If it comes down and you have no say so in your government or how things go for your area, and you are getting the shaft end of the deal, do i think that is cause for war? Yes. approx 90% of southerners did not own slaves, and a lot of influential leaders in the south released their slaves at the outset of the war.
