So overall it’s hard who to blame this game on. We can’t fix officiating so I’d rather not harp on that. Like CJH’s post game press conference, I think it was obvious enough on the field that there’s really not much more you can say about it.
Joe:
The guy is an enigma. Sometimes it clicks and he looks like he could compete for a Heisman, and then he reverts to how he was when he showed up 2 years ago. I love the guy but that hamstrings our offense significantly.
Moving the chains consistently is a huge factor in this offense’s success and he has a bad habit of just missing his WRs high, low, or behind with a 100mph heater on a 10 yard route. Last year it looked like he had learned when to take something off of it, this year has just been full power almost every throw again.
His deep ball was nice today and should have drawn a PI or 2 in addition to the big Squirrel TD. He also ran really well for the most part and didn’t look like a statue in the pocket which is great. He just isn’t as reliable as you need a 6th year senior to be and won’t win us games we don’t out talent our opponents in.
Defense:
Outstanding first half, tired and uninspired second half. I have to cut them some slack, the offense kept them on the field almost in perpetuity it seemed in the second half. That being said, idk what TM saw on the blown coverage TD that made him want to cover nobody.
A lot of bad run gap assignment in the third, especially once they started implementing more read option plays. Also are DBs are still mid at best. Walker, McCullough, Turnage, McDonald are all liabilities in coverage. We need a huge infusion of talent there so hopefully the young guys like Gibson, Matthews, Conyer, and Slaughter pan out.
Playcalling:
Good for the most part, awful when it counted most. On 4th and 1, we regularly eliminate our wide splits and run an essentially wildcat style shotgun setup. This telegraphs the run, starts the ball carrier back 2 yards, and allows them to stack the box. Against a DL like Bama’s that’s just incompetence. You’re telling me you really expect Ollie Lane to get the push necessary for that play?
We also don’t trust Joe to throw much in the redzone and that kills our entire offense there. It doesn’t help that without Bru we have no WRs with great physicality. They again just load the box and dare us to try and play bully ball, which is not where our run game excels.
Overall between being hosed by the refs and having an offense that misfires more than a Model T, there’s a lot of blame to pass around. CJH is great at designing his offense, but I think he works best with someone in the booth helping make the playcalls.
Also it’s clear we can’t beat UGA with Joe. I love the guy, but he is what he is at this point. Can Nico do better? Do we see a shorter leash for Joe now that the division and CFP are basically out of reach? No way to know, hopefully we see some progress there before season’s end.
