Recruiting Football Talk VII

I really hope the administration doesn’t think a 8-4 season is a good season. Holy **** what’s the point in going to games or donating to NIL or athletics department? Lmao imagine Kirby Saban or the other top SEC programs thinking 8-4 is a good season. Saban would resign immediately if he went 8-4. Aggies are about to run off Jimbo for hovering around a 8-4 record just as they did sumlin. Just not reality in the upper sec
Take a breather

That would be really nice, but I don't see it happening. I think it's far more likely that Georgia will absolutely bludgeon Ole Miss. Lane talks a monster game, but his team very rarely delivers in big games.
52-17. I think that qualifies as a bludgeoning.

I do too, I think you're right about how times have changed, especially with the portal and nil being available, but we still have the resources to be a national draw. We have always recruited nationally, not just regionally. Will it be harder, absolutely, but the right staff can do it.

Yeah - but I don’t think the right staff can recruit year in and year out at a top-5 level

Alabama, Georgia and Ohio State already are at that level and I don’t see them stopping. That leaves two spots.

Texas and Texas A&M both have more money than pretty much anyone and now can recruit to the SEC - so they are great candidates to take the other two.

Then you have Southern Cal, LSU, Florida, Florida State, etc that, if they wake up and get consistent, can easily move into that spot.

On paper - I just don’t see what natural advantage Tennessee has that should make me expect Tennessee can be at that level every single year.

This season has really proven how you can’t miss on big prospects and you have to go all out on transfers. Imagine having Verse and a few others that we let slip away instead of pay for.

Hope our coaches learned a hard lesson that you have to accumulate depth to the fullest and not hope some will come along. Many never will.

We can’t miss on the Nicos, Boo Carter, and others of the world. We have to recruit better and kill the portal.

Also, Heupel and these coaches have to stop playing seniors to appease them and reward staying. You have to play the talent and let them grow. I see no reason why we haven’t seen more of the younger linebackers and DBs. It’s been obvious that Milton isn’t our answer and we sit a future first rounder on the bench. Who knows that this season could have been if you started Nico from the start.

The one part I try to give them leeway for is that it’s a lot easier to fit in 1 stand out talent in the scheme when you can trust the 10 guys around them. With the level of talent we had it was probably better to have a group play as a unit vs the whole back 7 being very disjointed. As the bottom line talent gets better we’ll see those special freshman get more play time

Saban would fire some referees if he somehow went 8-4. He wouldn't resign. Hell, he might fire Greg Sankey.

Ok, so I was thinking about our road issues. One thing that is clear about Heupel's teams even back to UCF is that they're a bit undisciplined and get penalized a good bit. Part of that you can chalk up to trying to operate the offense at warp speed, but it's clear that playing smart and disciplined are not qualities of a Heupel team. That type of stuff tends to get worse on the road and this year's team isn't really equipped to constantly overcome costly penalties. If they could find a way to really tighten things up and really reduce the penalties, I think they would be a much better road team and certainly much better overall. Hopefully that's a big point of emphasis heading into 2024.

The seniors, unlike fans, prob still feel like they have a lot to ply for. Throwing a true Fr into the mix bc you’re 7-3 signals you’ve given up on the current season and moved to worrying about next year.
Sure. There needs to be a balance between the present and the future.

You don’t play Nico vs Georgia. And you certainly don’t play him vs Vandy if we beat Georgia.

But if we’re 7-4 headed into Vandy, and you likely win the game with either QB - what should Heupel’s priority be?

We play Arkansas and Oklahome next year, instead of South Carolina and Missouri... Due to it being an 8 game confrence schedule for 2024. Also, Saban made some kind of comment about the future and not playing Tennessee regularly on a yearly basis going forward, or something along those lines. A good bit of current conference members, maybe half or close to 40% at least balked at the 9 game scheduling model, so for now, it is an 8 game schedule with one permanent opponent. Even the Volquest guys said that was a win for the Vols as far as scheduling. Much more difficlt for Tennessee if we had to play 9 games and kept Bama as one of our permanent rivals, and trust me, I'm 56 and view it as (1) Bama, (2) Gators, and then (3) Georgia, in that order, but an 8 game schedule is better for Tennessee.

Right, plus, it looks like we will only be playing 8 conference games and not 9, as was previously thought. So, that means that after next year, we won't play Bama, Florida and Georgia every year. Our permanent rival will be Vanderbilt in that scenario, while for Bama it will be Auburn. To me, that is a win.. I'll take my chances with Texas and Oklahoma, as compared to playing Bama, Gators, Dawgs yearly. I think it helps the Vols with scheduling going forward.
It does help, but as an old guy, I don't want to lose the bammers. I want them every year no matter what. Few things are better than a winning streak over them.

These same idiots are gonna be the biggest cry-babies when, because of this pack of idiots, Heupel packs his bags for another job the first chance he gets.
There is no other high caliber job that comes with money + facilities + no idiots. If he is top notch, every job comes with idiots.

I’m so ready for consistent 10 win seasons and it doesn’t feel like we are even close.

We will never produce 10 win seasons year in and year out, no matter who is coach.

Go ahead and accept that as the base line.

But we can catch lightning in a bottle and have really fun individual seasons

That’s my view of Tennessee football

I submit the last 50 years as evidence in support of my view.
