Recruiting Football Talk VII

Here’s my hot take for the night…..who gives a **** about football anymore! It’s a dying and barbaric sport that won’t be around soon because of CTE! We’re just ahead of the curve at not caring and focusing our efforts in the sports that actually matter.

Barnes and Vitello are going to win us a lot of games this year in the sports that matter. Time to have some fun.
lol. Football isn’t going anywhere.

They’ll go after a few from south Utah state and Montana state and determine a few guys transferring from other top programs that Georgia/Bama/OSU want as not fitting the culture…. Repeat cycle.
Just making stuff up. We’ve taken transfers from USC, Oregon, Miami, Florida, Texas, BYU, Georgia Tech, and Arizona State just in the last 2 years.

I have no opinion on what his priority should be. I’m good with whatever he chooses
Ok. That’s fine.

You seemed to allude to signaling to the seniors about priorities. Maybe I misinferred.

I think Josh has dueling priorities here. Both to the seniors, and to the program. I think the outcome of the Georgia game should dictate how he weighs them. Jmo.

Alright, final summary thought for tonight:

If you think Tennessee is a sleeping juggernaut that should be pumping out 11+ wins seasons and winning (at least) every other national title if we “just had the right coach,” then today is absolutely a massive blow. You absolutely should spend the next few months sulking and melting down on message boards.

If you think Tennessee is a fun, high quality, top 15 program that can win a title if we catch a break and the right pieces fall in place, then today is simply a disappointment. You should wake up refreshed tomorrow and go enjoy life!

Top10 program, but yeah

Yeah - but I don’t think the right staff can recruit year in and year out at a top-5 level

Alabama, Georgia and Ohio State already are at that level and I don’t see them stopping. That leaves two spots.

Texas and Texas A&M both have more money than pretty much anyone and now can recruit to the SEC - so they are great candidates to take the other two.

Then you have Southern Cal, LSU, Florida, Florida State, etc that, if they wake up and get consistent, can easily move into that spot.

On paper - I just don’t see what natural advantage Tennessee has that should make me expect Tennessee can be at that level every single year.
I don't see A&M being able to keep up with Texas, they will be second fiddle again. Texas will own the state again. Tennessee has a long history of owning the Carolinas and Virginia, lot of elite players have come from there. Not to mention we just went pulled Nico from Cali.

We have the ability to wake up and get consistent just as those teams you mentioned. We recruited against FSU, Miami, Fla, OSU, Michigan, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Texas etc. back in those days too. We are a blue blood or at least borderline blue blood football program, we are very capable of consistently recruiting top 5 classes. We have the budget and the nil to do it.

If we haven’t been “opening up” the offense be use of joe then that’s coaching malpractice. We had everything in front of us this year until we choked in the swamp. Then the second half at bama, now at mizzouri…. Missouri….the play calling is sub par this year and it ain’t only joe.
Joe is what he is.

It would be coaching malpractice to ask him to do something they know he can’t do. So they haven’t.

Heup & Joey would be sitting pretty, looking like geniuses, if #5 was in the cockpit.

We'd have more losses on our record if Nico started from the start. That's what this season would have been. Hell, he probably would have gotten hurt behind this OL when Cooper was out. But sure, throwing away the future sounds like a great idea.
Lol. Plenty of freshmen start now at QB. It’s a new age of football with the portal. Either play the talent or they leave.

We wouldn’t have more losses. We beat Medicare to bad teams. He would have done that.

I just disagree. I haven’t seen enough evidence to persuade me we can in the modern college football era. I don’t think for a moment it is due to lack of effort or want to from the coaches, particularly in the early parts of their tenures.

It’s not the players not running the system well, at least I would hope not because we are in year 3 and most guys now have been in the program 3 years, so that would negatively show the staffs recruiting ability/developing
We talking offense or defense? I think last year showed they could develop. He's really only had two full recruiting classes and under the stank of ncaa investigations. If its the same year five i'll agree but I honestly think we're limited on offense because Milton just doesn't have the ability to run the system at a high clip.

Biggest weakness on this team is the defense. I know some will swear on their dead grandmother's grave that it's Joe Milton, but they're wrong. It's the defense. Especially when we're on the road. Look at points given up at home vs. points given up on the road.
The worst part is the defense actually shows they can be elite but then they take a day off. Great teams don’t take any days off.

That’s what you took away today? It’s football. We are fans and alumni. The coaches and players are very well paid. today they so far underperformed expectations it’s not even remotely acceptable. We will demand better and they will probably wait too long to fix deficiencies. Which will lead to the 7th head coach in 18 years. We are one anomaly season ( last year) from being utterly irrelevant in the CFP era.
