it's been less than ideal. we need players.
Unpopular opinion, but we need to do better in recruiting. Expressed it last year, too, and got lambasted. Probably will this year, too. But when you look at the classes that Bama and Georgia continue to put together (have you seen their head start on next year's class), we are so far behind. And you have to look at Bama and Georgia because that's where we want to be. That's the goal. And it just gets harder with Texas and OU joining the SEC.

I like Josh Heupel, a lot. And I hope he can figure recruiting out. He's done great with what he has, but to get better, you need better talent. That's just a fact. We need to win more recruiting battles.

I'm not sure if its NIL, assertiveness by coaching staff (pushing for commits), or not a wide enough net. But whatver it is its a knock, this staff has good recruiters. TN is a great program. All the tools are there. There is no excuse they gotta get it figured out.

Too often we get the visit, kids have a blast, then look for any reason not to come here, its strange.

Probably get the dumpster here, but Butch Jones did recruit pretty good ...but couldn't coach worth a damn in game ...

I try not to criticize Huepel. Very genuinely want him to be successful, and be here for a long long time. Guy is a good coach.

Recruiting is good, it isnt great. And right now we need great. This class is right on that cusp. Seaton would go a long way. Saleapanga or Smith would help. Landing Bates would make this a top a to bottom great class.

we have had better classes the past two years than we did any year with Butch.
I was legit coming to type this
I think the difference was over signing. It was easier to over sign, and take a chance on guys. So glad they capped these classes at 25 to help make it 'easier to rebuild a team.' Such BS, it is and always has been to allow Bama an easier road to Atlanta.

This is our best class so far that we have had in many years…. It’s a growing process and our recruiting has grown every year. Every school in the country is after the guys you are mentioning…. No way that we will win every single battle. It is much more important that we hit on the overwhelming majority of the guys that we do sign… That is my bigger concern right now.

We need a few studs from each class and the rest to be solid football players. It doesn’t seem that we are as good at scouting recruits as i originally thought we were.

I agree with some of what you're saying. It is concerning, esp on the LOS'. To include Garner, btw what's going on with DL recruiting??

My point is we seems to lose on a disproportionate amount of Top 100 players. It seems like we lose a lot of these battles. Lets just say we got Mauigoa, or one of our top tackle prospects in last two years.

If they stay healthy, how does that impact 2024? If we land one of our top DL prospects in last two years, how does that help going into 2024, with so many potentially leaving? What about WR? And I mean having a rising soph, dynamic playmaker. Landing a Wingo type in addition to Matthews, and Staley is what this offense needs.

Anyone noticed that some people either say "I'm a vol fan" or "I'm a vols fan"

Is it just me that thinks it sounds dumb when people say "I'm a vols fan"?

"As a vols fan" = "as a volunteers fan"

Just sounds wrong.
I don’t understand why people don’t say “I’m a Volunteer!”

If you are a VFL, then you are not just a fan.

Most use Fulmer’s success in recruiting as a barometer. But things have changed. Bama, UGA, Clemson, and even places like North Carolina are much better programs than when Fulmer coached. If the midstate has a down year in talent, then that means we have to go 3-4 hours away in other states. Guys that Fulmer could pull in Georgia and Alabama are now going to those state schools. Obviously, UT still has the resources to recruit well, but it’s not the same as it used to be. Hopefully, Nico shows out next year because that is the type of thing that can pull more talent.

Our edge/DE recruiting has been great. Weirdly not much at DT.

Pearce, Josephs, Bradley, Herring, Ross. I’m sure I’m forgetting someone.

Didn't like him but he had 2 top 5 classes ....did I say bring him back...damn
We could sign over 25 a class. There were some powder puff ****'s in there.

Botch benefitted from a generational in state class. Still he went out and got it done. Still he missed on prettiest QB this side of Clemson, Higgins, and Tee's boy.

In those years though, the state of Tennessee had multiple players in the top 100. Hurd, Malone, Jennings, Kelly, Phillips, Richmond were all national top 100. Barnett and Jack Jones were top 150.

This year, TN does not have a player in the top 100.

Agree. If you are given all the tools to get it done, you should get it done in a reasonable time period. Because of how far the program fell and the serious NCAA issue that did not resolve until this year, I see that it needs to be at an elite level by Year 6 unless he proves along the way that he is not who most think he is. The clock starts ticking this offseason for me.

Voltello and Barnes are at a higher level of talent respectively. They have also been here longer. They do it differently, but both sell Rocky Top well and have high expectations for player performance. That has not yet been done in football. However, it can be done. Both Voltello and Barnes have elite program assistant coaches. Heup has a handful and a lot of mediocrity with the rest. To get to the next level that has to change this offseason because it affects both recruiting and player development.

“Disproportionate” opposed to whom? Bama, UGA, Ohio State and Michigan amongst others always get theirs. Disillusioned entitlement is an exercise in futility. This upcoming class is the first where the NCAA bull cannot be used against us in negative recruiting. Let reality air out before pulling the “concerned” button, I say. Last time I’m weighing in on these discussions. They’re pointless. If the coaches can’t get it done, everybody will be right at the same time. With previous coaching staffs, I never felt confident we could compete EVEN WITH a top 5 class. Butch’s one-off with Trey and Pruitt and Niedermeyer luring in Wanya and Darnell was the closest we got to bringing in legit big uglies…and Mahoney/Friend couldn’t develop them to even mediocre status. Ellarbee can take cast-offs and at least compete on the worst days. Ok…that’s it.

Offf course SEC Nation and the human d***o known as Tim Tebow and his bestie Paulie Finebaum start the show off with the Munson call from 2001. Still makes me sick, in the gut.

Anytime I think of Munson...

Such an overrated call. It isn’t even good. Just some redneck reddin’ out on the radio. “We just CRUSHED their FACE!” Oh, “we” did that? You on the field, or sitting in a booth munching Doritos? Please.

We aren’t capped at 25 per year anymore. It’s just a hard 85 total number for the team
