Recruiting Football Talk VII

I think pate ranked sec jobs once this way, and based it on resources and in state talent more than results.

1. Georgia
2. Alabama
3. Texas A&M
4. LSU
5. Florida
6. Auburn
7. Tennessee

Now, with Texas and Oklahoma.. I don’t know where they’d fit in there but it’s surely ahead of us.
The recruiting geography is certainly one thing that can hurt UT. People can say that Nashville, Atlanta, and Charlotte are all relatively short drives. But only one of those is in state. Other than an occasional player in Chattanooga, UT has virtually no talent within 1.5-2 hours from its campus. None. Some years, the entire state only has a few players in the top 250-300.

Cool, they have a playoff berth and a conference title. Its been a quarter century since we've had one of those. Players notice that.
You really think that's the same as being in the SEC? Even with Texas' win over Bama this year, what would they have done with an SEC schedule? Not apples to apples.

You've worsened your fallacy. You've moved from "we should be what we used to be" (with no analysis of the differences between the two and what needs to be done with current resources to get there), to "we should be what TX has been" (with no analysis of the differences between the situation of the two).

You can't escape the fact that expectations should be based on what the program is dealing with *right now* (i.e. current rosters, handicaps, etc), as opposed to the level of success you used to be used to, and most especially as opposed to *completely different teams*!

This should be critical thinking 101.

You just used 'Smyrna ATL Vol' and 'Critical Thinking' in the same breath.

Sigh...

You're using UF as an example of your desired process. The uncomfortable fact is that that example has not led to sustained success.

Seriously. What about that do you not get?

Now, to defend, you could claim that you didn't intend to use UF as the example for your argument, and I could ask, "Huh?" or you could claim that that example shows that your desired process has created success and the level of wins you want, and I could say, "Huh?"

Your entire spiel has been that we need to act like who we once were, and not settle. To defend it, you pointed out how UF has kept firing coaches in search of success. You even pointed out that they are currently in a losing state that's firing their coach. If it wasn't an example that your desired process will work, then... You just wanted to randomly use an example that seems to contradict your argument?
Not to mention, Florida would be just fine right now if they hadn't fired Mullen. They had down years trying to replace Trask, but Mullen would have developed them another All-SEC QB. That's what he does.

So Florida is a TERRIBLE example. They're a perfect example of what NOT to do. They continually made bad hires and when they finally got the "big one" they made a bad fire.

Been wondering , if players still had to sit out a year..
Do you think this Portal activity would slow down tremendously????

Saying you wouldnt see hundreds of players jumping for greener pastures so quickly...
I like the idea of unless you are a grad transfer, you have to stay at a school a minimum of 2 years in order to transfer a second time.

I didn’t use UF as an example for us. I have been saying they won’t stay down long and will keep searching for a good coach. Never once said we should do what they are doing. In fact, I stated we should retain Heup and he is the man. We just need to make changes to get over the hurdle. But everyone keep on.

Dude you are absolutely crazy.

The post about coaching change was for us because the poster said I don’t think we need a coaching change for us.

And he was replying to this?
Mullen was 34-15 when fired and had won the East and double digit wins his first years. Fired for one bad season. They will fire Napier and hire someone big next year.

How about this, which preceded the comments?
No, they won the East not long ago. They don’t settle for average. They will go big next hire. That’s why we have to win now against them.

Or this?
I agree, which is why I think you hit the nail on the head when you said to expect 8-9 every season from now on.

Shoot Texas is in the playoff and beat Bama with Sark as a coach lol. But they gave him a ton of money and he hired an awesome staff.

We’re over here happy with Willie coaching our DBs.

And you wonder why people interpret your argument to be "ignore the current problems and fire until we're successful again"?

Ding, ding, dinig!

Okay but thats what, 4th in the conference? And still we are in the teens in most recruiting rankings? Nowhere in the portal.
We will never be able to have accurate assessments and debates about recruiting until fans stop using "We are ranked 8th and this other team is ranked 6th so their class is better than ours!" logic. Rankings do matter. But they are NOWHERE near accurate enough to pinpoint this class is ranked at 2,121.23 points and so they are better than this class that we are rating with 2,046.43 points. It's absurd. View the rankings in tiers to account for obvious standard deviation. The class we have right now is not in the Elite Tier with Ohio State, UGA, Alabama. But UT is squarely in the VERY NEXT tier. And to try to distinguish some difference between each school in that tier based on 'scores' given by recruiting sites is beyond stupid.

It’s dumb to me to rank teams and then say that’s where they should be because of these rankings. IMO.

Any team on this list has the resources, $$$, etc. to be national title contenders any year.
It's basically The Big 6 plus aTM. Then you fold in Texas and Oklahoma. Any given year, any of these programs can rise to the top. The pecking order is fluid, but the foundation is there, along with the expectations and resources.
