I know nothing about fishing or stocking ponds, but maybe you could make an attempt with crappie, and go to plan B only as needed. Maybe stock some minnows or crayfish as crappie food. That last suggestion is based on what an internet site told me they like to eat besides insects. Someone else could say better whether it's worth a shot or a waste of time and money.I kind of figured that but I really didn't know. I hate it because as much as we love to bass fish, we love catching crappie more. Besides, they taste alot better than bass too. I'd rather eat crappie than any other fish.
For smaller ponds….20 acres or less, you have to decide what you want. Bass do not do well with crappie is a small confined area. Crappie feed in schools and are aggressive whereas a bass likes to wait and ambush their prey. Crappie eats all the bait the bass like.Bass yes, crappie, probably not. If it's a true acre & half you should be fine with bass. The one my buddy has is about 2.5-3 acres and has massive bass in it. Tons of bluegill, but not crappie. . . and what looks like giant grass carp. I believe he tried to add them (crappie) a long time ago, but they didnt make it.
That is not a bad idea, I have thought about putting some thread fin shad in there too, but don't know if its big enough to do that either.I know nothing about fishing or stocking ponds, but maybe you could make an attempt with crappie, and go to plan B only as needed. Sounds like a pretty awesome place. Shouldnt be too hard to manage it, once you figure out what type of fish you want in it. I dont think my buddy does anything special to his, aside from keeping the banks cleared off and the drain cleared out.I don't plan on putting catfish either. My brother in law has about a 2 acre pond on the rest of the farm he inherited that is full of catfish but the bluegill are not big at all anymore. Of course he doesn't eat either and he and his son go fishing down there about twice a year. He just doesn't like to fish.
It is spring fed but its a very weak spring. I remember when he built it and it took forever for it to get to full pool.
. . . i'd be planning a lot of trips like that.I'm going to take a day off next month and take the kids on a field trip to a fish farm down in hawkensville and talk to them, but I bet they tell me the same thing. Since my kids are home schooled it actually can be counted as a school related activity. We'll all enjoy touring their facility and see how they operate.........admittedly, I am probably more excited than they are.
Thanks bud. And to be honest, all I want to do is keep the pond clean and and the dam cleared out around and cleaned out. I'm really not interested in pouring alot of time and money into it. Just want my son to be able to walk down to the pond and go fishing. I didn't have that opportunity when I was growing up. I want him to have it.Sounds like a pretty awesome place. I hate when coaches get all up in their feelings about that chant…. it’s embarrassing, imo.Barnes’s response to a TAMU beat reporter asking about the environment View attachment 619251
Yeah, that shouldn't be tough to do. A youtube channel called. . . "bamabass" built a pond. He has a name, but the series he did on building the pond and stocking it is pretty entertaining. Thanks bud.
