They don’t know the person. They’re rolling with their own conceptions.
They signalled a million times that they would pivot from saving Kellie to calling for her successor and DW both to be fired in a second. They were making ridiculous -- even impossible -- demands, designed to fake up a lunatic benchmark that would guarantee they could dishonestly declare the new coach a failure.

And even worse, they were repeatedly lying that all of those things had been PROMISED to them.

Thank you for saying exactly what I wanted to say. The LV program with its legendary coach is the reason women’s BB is where it is today. After nearly a generation since Pat, I thought we needed to hire similar to Bama when they hired Saban - a sure thing. Caldwell is not a sure thing because she hasn’t coached at this level. But it is done and I will support her because there is definitely potential.
There are no sure things. None

I like the hire of Caldwell. Proven winner and on-court coach, even if it isn’t P5 or D1. All of her teams throughout her career put up a ton of points. In women’s and Men’s CBB, you see coaches like her step up in competition level and be successful quite often. Give her resources and let her build.
DW got this, he just does.

Not saying this hire is equivalent but it just felt like the approach was a little John Currie-esque…

I’m in a wait and see approach. I don’t think that her prior “winning” can be assumed to automatically translate to the next biggest stage. Time will tell.

As with any coaching search nowadays, only about 4 coaches out there that could be hired and you could just assume they would win at UT. They’re all handsomely paid at their current schools and in major conferences already.

I agree with you, InVOL. I generally do. There are two decisions with transitions-- and getting one of them right isn't enough. Personally, I thought Holly and Kellie were both given too long, given the standards and expectations of the program. As you point out, powerhouse programs don't stay that way when they're neglected. Many people don't realize how much recruiting has fallen off. In-state players do not want to come to UT. Top talent like Rhyne Howard don't even want to talk to UT. Even legacy players look elsewhere. Kellie had strong headwinds with recruiting and NIL. I don't think keeping her long-term was the right choice, but I, like many, think UT needed to fix internal issues before blowing it all up.

Anyway, it's been fun conversing with you on here. Think I've overstayed my welcome, though. Seems like a good time to step away.
Darn! I hope I didn't post something to cause that. One reason I log in is to see your post. You are always welcome as far as I'm concerned. I still owe you a cold beverage when you're in town.
