CHARLES WEBB-uh???
Charlie Garner????
Cmon Cain...
What was his top 10?
Imo, it should be (not in order), and based on a combination of factors (all time cumulative stats, per touch stats, and accolades received): McEver, Feathers, Cafego, Lauricella, Majors, Webb, Cobb, Stewart, Lewis, Henry.
Outside Looking In (painfully):
- Johnnie Jones (top 5 all time rushing yards, 5.5 y/c, #6 single season rushing, two of top 10 single game rushing). I should be crucified for leaving JJ and Thompson (and maybe garner too) out of the top 10. But if we’re doing all of history and not just the past 50 years, trying to compare the game and stats and accolades of all of them, what choice do I have?
- Thompson (see Johnnie jones, had the misfortune of sitting behind Howard/cobb/webb or would have likely made top 10, similar to other rbs that missed due to a crowded backfield)
- Garner (could argue best athlete at rb we ever had, threat to score every time and surprising strength, but only got 2 years from him). Others in similar boat also missed top 10. This one actually could be top 10, best bet of the outside looking in group to convince me he should be in it, but you need to convince me that if he is, who did I put that shouldn’t be on the list?
- Morgan (struggle with this one. Haven’t seen enough of his highlights. Rb/wr. Best year as a sophomore, but 3rd among rbs* for all time tds, 5.5 y/c, 1st rounder)
Honorable Mention
- Stephens (single season yards record). Didn’t benefit from a crowded rb room. Finally got his chance and capitalized. Love this guy.
- Graham (top 10 all time yards, single season yards, and all time touchdowns). How does he miss top 10? Seems like he put together an impressive career without being the most impressive to do it. He did own Bama that’s for sure though. Heckuva rb.
- Kamara (if only we had him longer and not under butch misguidance)
- Hurd (see kamara)
- Wright (one more year and I’m convinced he breaks a lot of records).
Watchlist: Sampson. This dude good. Let’s see if he can produce when the focus is all on him.
I know we all love the 90s, and we were dominant, and had great players, but those teams being so good shouldnt automatically equate to those players being the best in our history. And being too young to know that is not an acceptable excuse! (Coming from a 31 yr old)
