Recruiting Football Talk VIII

Are we gonna make the tournament or not?
They'll definitely make the tournament. But it does look like it's gonna be one of those 60 points and a cloud of dust seasons.

Need a bucket for a chance to win the game and the ball goes to Ziegler. That seems like a recipe for a pretty bad offense.

But I think they are too good defensively not to make the tournament.

If we had projected the season based on our high profile exhibition game last year, we would have scored 90+ pts per game, would have been an awful defensive team, and Gainey would have been our second leading scorer.

I would avoid making projections about the season based on exhibitions.

Vandy is 13 pts from being undefeated.

Hard to believe. Playing in Nashville is undoubtedly our toughest remaining roadblock to the playoffs (unless we can get the upset in Athens, then it's gravy).

I guess we're gonna forget that one of those losses came against Georgia state. And vandys home field environment is less than initimidating.

I'm rewatching the Alabama game because i'm addicted to Tennessee football, especially wins over rivals. I'm starting to think that CJH Teaches his quarterbacks to miss long instead of short to limit turnovers.

Every qb that we have seen him have at Tennessee has missed long for the most part when they do miss, even Hooker. Hooker was better overall with accuracy but even he had to get into a rhythm and we had multiple veteran WRs that made NFL rosters. I don't know that the receiver group has been as good since 22, especially with Bru's injury last year. More potential and a deeper WR/TE room but not as much production or as sure-handed and scheme confident yet.

It makes sense that our aggressive scheme would focus on limiting turnovers as a priority when we know that if we hit some of our big play shots then we likely put up 30-40 points a game while improving on defense into what we have this year. Heupel's entire coaching philosophy is aggressive to stress the opponent at all times and will always have some self inflicted mistakes and margin for error on lower percentage plays. More experience and game reps is the only real fix to improve. Nico will grow, develop chemistry with WRs as they improve and get to around 50% on balls over 20 yards, which is elite.

That's only a few completions per game better than his current 30ish percent and means probably 10-28 more points per game. Very achievable and puts us having a top 5 scoring offense with usually being top 1-3 inintimidating.
If that's what they're being taught it's kind of dumb imo. If you have faith in your wide receivers you should prefer underthrowing them (if anything) so they at least have the opportunity to catch the ball.
