Recruiting Football Talk VIII

Purely out of curiosity, how many folks nowadays "go into radio?"

Talking young, aspiring folks. I wonder how many people even listen to the radio broadcasts vs 30 years ago. Not diminishing it, as I still believe it's a great format in its own niche way. But would have to imagine not a ton of people with decades left in their career have cut their teeth behind a radio mic.
The radio broadcast is an absolute necessity. If you are at the game live, you don't have a clue what is going on without radio. If you want to know about injuries or what the hell the explanation of the call was you have to have radio even if it is delayed.
If you are watching on tv, you either sync up with the radio and turn down the tv or you have to listen to people like Kirk Herbstreit which less preferable to being waterboarded.
It was not covered in the media but Herbstreit's dog actually committed suicide after listening to Kirk pleasure himself after the Blowhio St win over State Penn.

I was just being super sarcastic lol

Definitely need the bye week though. ETSU gonna have us begging for air after the 2nd quarter. Bye week will be crucial to plan for UAB.

Speaking of UAB, to everyone going to that game, DO NOT take your daughter or even child, Jalen Kitna will be the starting QB….i think we all remember that story.
chop block city

So you're saying Tessitore can't multitask? The Vols Radio announcers job isn't 7 days a week.

Plenty of individuals have 2 different jobs in , hell Jesse Palmer is color commentator on College Football and the host a Cooking Contest on the Food Network.
Being a radio announcer is not a “1 day job” either. You need to do hours of research not only on your team but the visiting team so you are aware of roster, stats, and current storylines.

Generally, this involves putting together either a physical or electronic document you can quickly pull from. In Kesling’s case, he had a large trifold that he developed each week for games.

I would say being a skilled radio announcer is at a minimum a 3-4 day a week job. This is a big reason why our announcers generally do two sports at most concurrently.

People forget but, Jon Ward had a law degree. Had a very good memory, smart man.

With NIL scholarship limit means nothing, which is another blow to the power of the NCAA. Teams sign a PWO make school costs part of the player's NIL money. There are many very good players not on scholarship that receive NIL money to cover school. Will Brooks is a perfect example, people are always moaning. I can't believe he's not on scholarship. His NIL more than covers that. The media loves the line, he's a walk-on, it makes for a good storyline but there are no true walk-ons anymore.

I am guessing Tessitore has too many gigs and makes good money. The UT play by play guy has traditionally just been employed by UT or the network. But guys have done and still do multiple gigs. Dave Pasch does college football and is the Arizona Cardinals radio guy. FSU’s radio guy (now retired from FSU) does Tampa Bay Bucs play by play, and he used to do football, basketball, and baseball for FSU. Just depends on who they want.

Two concurrent gigs is a healthy spot to be. Three is something you can do a couple weeks a year, but not long term.

If you are doing three or more, you are very, very unlikely to be doing it well.

Florida is stuck. Huge buyout and in the portal/playoff era it is difficult to make a coaching change without seriously handcuffing the team for a couple years. Any top tier coach is coaching well into December and will miss out recruiting an entire cycle forcing them to take a chance and pursue an unproven or G5 coach or assistant. Players will enter the portal making it a total rebuild.
It is similar to the situation that Heup stepped into which makes it so amazing what he has accomplished. Anyone who complains about our current situation has no clue and should be completely disregarded. We went for a walk in the doggy park at night and stepped into a pile of fifty dollar bills.

Hubbs brought up a good point asking what the voice of the Vols job will actually look like as far as responsibilities, multimedia, podcasts.

I'd bet it's going to maximize the outreach of that position and probably be even more involved than what Bob is doing.

My buddy was getting gas at a Pilot off of the interstate between Nashville and Knoxville yesterday and he saw Mike Keith talking to the manager. He distinctly heard him say Go Vols as their conversation ended. As Keith was going to his car, my buddy saw what looked like a University of Tennessee media guide in his hand.
