Recruiting Football Talk VIII

I agree with not moving teams down for losing conference championship game.

Example: SEC
The first and second place teams in the SEC are Texas and Georgia. Whoever loses that game is second place in SEC. We are third place. Why would a third place finisher be ranked ahead of a second place finisher? I don’t understand why so many of you are saying if UGA loses we should move ahead of them. They are playing a bonus game. At worst they’ll be second place in SEC.

Additionally, the loser of the conference Championship game is already in a tough spot. These are physically demanding games. Now, if you lose, you have a shorter time to heal and prepare for the next opponent in round 1 of playoffs. So, it’s reasonable that the loser of the conference Championship game would at lease get to host in the first round and not be placed behind the third place team in the conference. So, I don’t see us moving ahead of Texas/UGA loser or Oregon/Penn State loser, and I don’t see Penn State being lower than OSU. Penn state will at worst be 2nd place in the Big 10, why would they be ranked lower than 3rd place OSU? It doesn’t make sense.

Throw in ND, plus two more conf champs, and that leaves us and OSU for 8th and 9th spot. Both have a good argument for 8th. Perhaps we’ll move up if UGA and Oregon wins in a blowout. That’s the only way our resume will improve over OSU’s, and the only way I see the committee putting us at 8, ahead of OSU.

Now, I’ve said from the beginning this should be a 16 team playoffs, no bye, top 8 host first round, use straight rankings, no conf championship games, maybe throw in a 13th game for all teams. In this scenario we would be top 8 rank and be hosting. Also, I’d do 16 team playoffs throughout the top 64 team. So, teams ranked 17-32 would play in a similar playoffs, etc. they’d play for money also. Winner of each playoff bracket, the team splits a large purse.

This seems like a victim mentality. If we were 11-1, we’d be hosting without a doubt.
would we yes behind ND because brand blue blood play nobody every year make the CFP or play 2 or 3 tough games a year lose them all but you are a blue blood so make the CFP Alabama. It is still the same 4, 8, 12 etc. teams does not matter

I want to reiterate how stupid it is to have automatic 1-4 and 12 as the conference champions.

First of all, the 12 for 5th best conference champion was only done under the idea that they assumed it would be a G5 team (or 2-Pac) ranked in the teens or 20s. Imagine a scenario where the 5 best teams in the country win their conferences. The #5 team would be the 12-seed and would have to play #6 who jumps to 5-seed. Bonkers.

Seed the bracket straight up. Right now it would be:
1. Oregon(aq) - bye
2. Texas(aq) - bye
3. Penn State - bye
4. Notre Dame - bye
5. Georgia v 12. Arizona State(aq)
6. Ohio State v 11. Alabama
7. Tennessee v 10. Boise State(aq)
8. SMU(aq) v 9. Indiana

Again, we do this for March Madness. Conference champs don't get the highest seeds, just auto-bids. So many conference champs end up 15 and 16-seeds. They seed the bracket straight up.
To support my argument, take 2022:
Final ranking - 1. Georgia(aq), 2. Michigan(aq), 3. TCU(aq), 4. Ohio State, 5. Alabama, 6. Tennessee, 7. Clemson(aq), 8. Utah(aq)***, 9. K State, 10. So Cal ***, 11. Penn State, 12. Washington***
*** denotes a Pac12 team.

So Utah is #8 and wins the Pac12 title game and they're rewarded by becoming the 12-seed dropping below USC and Washington and forced to play at Ohio State.

Now 2023 (even worse):
1. Michigan(aq), 2. Washington(aq), 3. Texas(aq), 4. Alabama(aq), 5. Florida State(aq)***, 6. Georgia, 7. Ohio State, 8. Oregon, 9. Mizzou, 10. Penn State, 11. Ole Miss, 12. Oklahoma.

Florida State is the 5th highest ranked conference champion so they get automatically assigned the 12-seed. They're #5 and undefeated. They are rewarded by going TO ATHENS to play #6 Georgia.

Okay I'll shut up.

I thought they got the #5 seed
