Recruiting Football Talk VIII

Catching up on CFB podcasts from this summer.

Bud Elliott saying that 2024 Tennessee reminds him a lot of 2016 Clemson. "Stud QB, good OL, REALLY good DL, interesting offense that opponents haven't figured out yet."
I would say their 2018 team is more accurate with a young Trevor Lawrence at QB and stout DL. I'll take the result for either team tho lol.

We called like 12 go balls in those 5 quarters so I would also ASSUME his over-throws had no effect on playcalling if we kept dialing it up. If he made bad reads, threw to the wrong WRs, or turned the ball over then I would agree playing calling we definitely be affected.

Joe's play wasn't good those 5 quarters, we all agree. His eyes and decision making was good, he just didn't execute. That's 100% on Joe.

The narrative last year's offense was struggling was solely on Joe (not saying you saying that, maybe you are. Hell idk lol), I don't buy that. Joe's play definitely played a big role (he was okay not great) but he had help.

Regardless, I think we all agree Nico and company will be more in line with 2022 than 2023. Looking forward to the 31st.
I disagree on his decision making then up til last season and I hardly think mine’s a unique view. I fell under the spell of his physics at the end of 2022 leading up to the beginning of last season. He had and has a higher ceiling with his arm strength, but he’s always a second hesitant or unaware in crucial moments and that translated to what we viewed. Very good if you compare it to pre-Heupel but a tad lacking when you’ve seen what clicks. Drops will always happen but the better QBs will complete that one at the end of the game to the very same weapon who dropped one earlier. You appeared to look for a stopping point and I’ll honor that.

Just an update from my early spring notes -

I have a good bit of optimism for Nico this year but recognize his early performance likely improves with experience. I’m not sure about the receivers but we have numbers so that may be in our favor. We also have talent at TE but in our scheme, no proven experience. We’re almost always running against a lite box so we should be good at RB whoever gets the carries.

I think the OLine is the key and I’m cautiously hopeful they will be a bit better against elite fronts this year. I don’t think any of the returnees were going to get drafted last year. Hopefully they’ll perform with that in mind this year as this is it; there’s no coming back in the cards right now. We need more power from those guys especially in the redzone and more discipline all the time. Anyway, that’s where I’m at on offense. As I noted in the pre-spring I’m not sure we can know what we can really do this year until we get to the first bye week. jmo.

Nick Saban noted at SEC media days that we have a QB-centric offense. Maybe so. He didn’t give any details. The one thing I figured out with Johnny Majors was that anyone could probably play QB for him because he always seemed to have an elite offensive line. I think that has been Georgia’s style under Kirby. Bennett and Beck were not highly coveted QB prospects but they were operating behind an elite OLine. I think over the last couple years (24/25) we’ve caught up to the Dawgs in OLine recruiting and may inch ahead. We’ve improved and Georgia has regressed, at least on paper. jmo.

Here’s the thing. Georgia has to replace two offensive linemen coming into this season. Their long time center, drafted by the Bills, a top 100 HS prospect, is slated to be replaced by a 3-star. So going from #60 in the composite to #450. At RT they’re going from Mims, the #8 HS prospect in his class to the #215 prospect in the class of his replacement. I would not be surprised if their OLine regresses a bit this year while it’s entirely possible that ours improves, especially with the added experience and of course our new 5-star left tackle. jmo.

On defense we’ll need the guys in the backend to gain confidence fast. They are the key and Grayson McCall and Jackson Arnold are more than good enough to show where we’re at early on. 247 recently ranked position groups for all SEC teams. They have our front 7 on defense at #2 in the conference behind only Georgia but they have our secondary at #12. I really don’t think #12 will be good enough against our schedule, meaning the maybe 5 teams that can beat us, so we may end up with 8 or 9 wins but if we can get up to speed with our new DBs sooner rather than later I think we could have a legitimate shot against anybody, including Georgia. jmo.

Generally, the biggest thing that gives me a bit of pause for this year is our overall lack of experience (returning production). In his May update Bill Connelly has us ranked second to last in the SEC, just ahead of Miss State and right behind Alabama. Kentucky is ranked first and Florida is ranked 3rd in the conference. Experience breeds confidence which is why it is so important. jmo.

One well respected analyst I have followed over the years that has written a lot about Heupel’s offense is Ian Boyd. Boyd works for the Texas On3 site now and this is a screen shot of his SEC predictions for this year.

Bonanza > Big Valley > Gunsmike
Yep. Of those three, that's the order I watched most frequently. Bonanza didn't have Audra Barkley but it was a better show.

Also was a big fan of The Rifleman and, like lots of kids, tried to imitate Chuck Connors' rapid fire rifle moves from the intro.

Another more obscure one I liked when I was younger was a show called Sugarfoot that no one ever seems to have heard of. So I was thrilled when they did a bit with the Sugarfoot theme song on Arrested Development.

There’s always hope. And GOD has this. She’s made it through so many pokes and prodding, she’s an inspiration to us all. She’s been through so much and her body defeated every obstruction thrown her way and your family’s. Y’all have this, I have no doubt, because you’ve got GOD, your family and your friends on your side. Please tell her this for me. She’s one strong fighter. As I said, you have my number if you guys need anything.
Thank you

I love that he has South Carolina winless in the conference and looking up at Vandy. I hope that happens.

Stuff like this drives me crazy…. i’m cheering for joe but he has thrown 6 total passes in a preseason game as a 4th string qb. I wish we could send Hooker to Georgia like we did Mike Griffith.

Hooker looks good in a preseason game. Gets praised. Dobbs looks good in a preseason game. Gets praised. Milton looks good in preseason. Gets trashed. I think some of you just actively want Milton to fail. Stop saying you are cheering for Joe. You aren’t. You think he stunk here so he will stink in the NFL.

These two things are not mutually exclusive though. I don't think he was great here (much improved over his play at Michigan though) and I have doubts about how good he will be in the NFL. That doesn't mean I'm not cheering for him, I want ALL Vols to do well in the NFL because it only helps the program and I like Joe Milton personally so I definitely want him to succeed.

We've come to the Mayo clinic a couple of times now, hoping they'd find something to be able to help her. They've done tests, a small surgical procedure today looking to see with a camera if they could find something they could fix to help. Unfortunately, they just don't see anything that surgery would stop the infections, which means it's just her body not able to fight the bacteria from where they took her bladder, and use your intestine to kinda make one. It's discouraging, but God has brought her through so much, i believe there's hope.
Prayers for Tiffany, you & friends/family, joevol33.

You know, I just assumed there would be no raw pork dishes (because of trichinella worms)... but the Germans eat Mett, a raw pork dish. I think the threat of Mett would drive me to invade Poland.
Yah. I saw a video of what looked like an eastern European family butchering a hog, and the kid walked up, sliced a sliver right off the hanging hog, and ate it raw.

Someone on here posted a few months ago that the danger of trichinella is mostly gone now? Shrug. I'll just cook it or ask the wife to.

Update from Wikipedia:
In swine, the prevalence varies from country to country, and regionally. Long-standing meat inspection programs in some European countries have drastically lowered prevalence rates among domestic swine. Domestic swine can be exposed to the parasite by: ...

...

Human infection caused by the domestic pig varies from country to country. While some countries do not report any human infection, other countries in Eastern Europe and Asia report hundreds or thousands of cases annually.

The United States reported 25 cases per year from 1991 to 1996, with few implicating raw or undercooked pork. Documented sources of human infection have also included game meats, such as wild boar, bear, walrus, fox, and cougar. From 1997 to 2001 meats other than pork were the most common source of infection, with more cases associated with home-raised pork than commercial. The decreased incidence of trichinellosis in the United States has resulted from changes in pork industry management standards and government regulations.

Happy Friday

"August 16, 2024: When you are worn out with fear and worry, remember that God is with you to show you the way out of the darkness into his glorious light."

Matthew 6:34 Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.
