Recruiting Football Talk VIII

Currie wasn't allowed to do his job during the hire to replace Butch. Mullen was the obvious first call, and when that didn't work out he was railroaded into Schiano. By the end of it, he was going to hire Leach before he was fired. I don't think Leach would have been as good here as Heupel has been, but he absolutely would have been a hell of a lot better than Pruitt.

When he was allowed to do his job with a lower-stakes hire like baseball, he hired Tony V.
A strong AD makes the hire himself. Saying he couldn’t do his job is kind of ridiculous. Sure, there were some influences, but look where that got him.

He also allowed the Grumors to fester. He was calling the shots as to how to handle it. Leadership….leadership…leadership.

No it isn't. When he actually tried to do his job, Bev Davenport called him back to Knoxville and fired him. The AD has multiple bosses.

Fair point. I will admit I look at it more from his bundling of the football search than I do anything else. But you are correct, the administration as a whole during that time was atrocious. Anyone remember “Big Orange, Big Ideas”? That ungodly eye sore of a banner covering half of alumni hall…man I hate Jimmy Cheek.

Lol…Currie went AWOL. He got fired because they had no clue what he was doing. He was awful, I don’t get how someone could defend him.

I get the Haslam’s back door’d his hiring, but have some leadership skills. He learned the hard way.

only thing I miss about those days is the fact there was a poster around everyone considered more negative than me. Can’t name him since I guess he was banned but we all know

They fired him because they didn't like what he was doing. They were trying to micromanage and babysit him. If you are letting your AD do his job and trust him, do you care what his exact whereabouts are 24/7?

He’s been pretty successful at wake forest

He was doing exactly what the Haslam’s (and Bev) wanted him to do. He got fired because Bev had no idea where he was. Bev got heat because he was incompetent at hiring a coach. She eventually went away too.
At first he was, yes. When the Schiano hire that Haslam wanted fell through, Currie started doing his own thing for several days, which was when they called him back and fired him.

Currie's time at Tennessee certainly won't be mentioned in any textbooks as a fine example of being an AD, but he was set up to fail. He had an impossible job with that football hire because the initial decision(s) really weren't his, and when those blew up that made it so much harder to conduct an actual search.
