Recruiting Football Talk VIII

Cutcliffe grew up playing football. Just didn’t play in college.
It’s kinda related but it’s not going to give you very much in the way of experience that matters. And I do think experience matters, other things do too. Cutcliffe’s brain mattered far more than experience as a player. For a guy like Coach Orgeron playing mattered and he brought that to what he did. But Cutcliffe could’ve been a brain in a jar and been just as valuable as he was.

I listened to a radio interview with long time TSU coach and Joe Gilliam Sr. years ago and he thought women would be great coaches. His logic was the best teachers are women and coaching all boils down to teaching. In some ways I can see how that would help. The argument that they couldn't do it because they never played doesn't really hold up due to the fact many on here know all the answers to fixing any problems the Vols have and have never put on the pads........just saying. By the way I have, just high school but still......

Coach Gilliam was a wonderful person and a great coach……missed by many

Playoffs.

Maybe the underperforming WRs and the RSFR QB and underwhelming OL conspired against him. Shockingly, the WR room is getting a major refresh...almost like the coach is trying to fix something. Just maybe he knows what he is doing.
Trying to fix something he's responsible for? I guess, but that's hardly laudable. If he knew what he was doing as well as you claim, he wouldn't need to be fixing it, the WR room would have never been so bad in the first place. Do we praise the careless camper who started the wildfire for helping put out the fire afterward?

Defense is why we made the playoffs. And the fact that the SEC was terrible this year.

There's no bigger fan of CJH than me, but it's kind of comical some of you are out here praising everything he does like he was perfect this year. His offense didn't perform well.

*If Holly Rowe feels so strongly about it, she could use her voice/money to help start an all women's professional football league. She can be a sideline reporter or do play by play or even be the commissioner of it. She would lead the way for a legitimate womens football league, complete with female coaches, players, referees, reporters, everything can be female. They won’t have to do the "bra and panies" league anymore. It would be monumental for women, similar to what they did with the WNBA.

She won't of course, because she wouldn't make as much money as she is now and she wouldn't be able to fuss about "we need more women coaching football". Who is "we", Holly? Hello?!? 🥴

The best teachers are women? What? That's not true at all. There's nothing about either gender that makes them better teachers.

And literally never having the played the game at any level would inhibit how well you can coach it. Analysts? Sure. Scheme? Sure. But technique and mechanics and other things that are part of coaching will be better taught by someone who has perfected those things themselves.

I do think a lot of sports teams miss out on a lot of value by not considering women (or any others who never played), but I definitely disagree that they're objectively better teachers because of their gender.

I miss the days when we would see that little Holly Rowe clip for what it was...not really a big deal. If she starts pushing lawsuits and protests to get more women hired as football coaches, then I'll be firing back too. Otherwise, a quick video clip and a few harmless comments don't move the needle.

That's usually how it starts, a few harmless comments. I don't mind a feel good story about what that young lady was doing for the Oregon football team. My problem was Holly Rowe saying within the 1st 8 seconds of that clip "we need more women in coaching football". I think women coaching mens football will eventually happen, but I'm old school and still think hiring the best person for the job should be priority, not hiring because of color or gender or to make a statement. If a woman is qualified, she should definitely go for it but don't give it to her because she's not a male.

Saw the new Nosferatu last night.

Now that movie is a work of art! Refreshing!

Eggers… emphasis on historical place setting, practical effects and lighting, realistic staging—all tied together with a hint of supernatural folklore. He’s one of the best doing it

I don’t think this is true.

Mike Macdonald, the head coach of the Seahawks, was an unathletic, unrecruited HS linebacker on a 1-9 HS team. The only position coaching role he ever held was as a DB coach for the Ravens. A position he never played at a level he never sniffed. The only value his playing time gave him was exposure to the game.

As it relates to a huge gender gap in coaching, it isn’t easy or practical to get that kind of exposure to the game if you don’t play it.

It’s a good film, if you’re into period films or the vampire lore it’s gonna be a great film.

For me 8-9 out of 10, a few small things I didn’t really enjoy. But I think there will be lots of Oscar buzz around it. Lily-Rose for sure for her performance!
