Recruiting Football Talk VIII

Nothing more annoying than a northern transplant to make snide remarks about places in the South closing for moderate or low snowfall.

It doesn't take a lot of intelligence to recognize the major differences in infrastructure and equipment to clear snow and ice in the South.
Arrogance and ignorance. The most annoying combo a person can have.

Those teams were so well coached on both sides of the ball. Yes, they were talented. But, play calling was elite. The defensive play call by PSU to rush three, then stunt DL. Offensive play calling. Fun to watch.

Their secondaries were superior overall just because their safety play was superior to Tennessee’s. Better LBs too, although we were in their league at LB before Pili’s injury.

The thing that Tennessee didn’t have yet in 2024 that those teams have is talent and DEPTH across the board. The job Heupel has done has made people forget that this was just Year 4 and we’re still limited by the NCAA sanctions. This was our first recruiting class being out from under the investigation cloud.

Those teams could suffer an injury to a guy like Pili and not lose a beat. Telander looked lost late in the season and was a huge step down from Pili. With a healthy Pili and good Safeties, we might’ve beaten Georgia. We had neither in that game.
Aren't we still limited to 83 this year? Not sure when this NCAA stuff will finally be over.

Just a quick question and not being a jerk. Do you think Heup wants to win a natty?

IMO, Heup is competitive and driven to be the best coach in the country. He’s 46 yrs old with another 15-20 plus years left in his career, maybe longer.
That requires you to make hard decisions and be willing to adapt.

IMO--- Did you see our Vanilla offense this season that teams were starting to figure out and scheme against? Did you see our WR's struggle to get separation, drop catchable balls, and now we have a mass exodus because there's smoke on them not gelling with the position coach? Nico many times running for his life? Yes we still won 10 games, but this offense took a step back this season of what we saw before.
We are getting subpar development on the Oline with what we are recruiting in, needing to continually grab from the portal for starters, so changes need to be made... Our defense had a ton of raw talent to mask a DC who seemingly refused to make adjustments during the game or scheme differently based on the opponent... That's why the better teams figured out what to do and had success... LB's were out of position and stuggled to pick up coverage, getting burned regularly after teams adjusted and figured it out the second half of the season. Pili going down killed us on that front...Sure I think he wants to win a natty, several in fact, but now the shine is a bit worn off and he needs to continue to adapt, adjust, make hard/not fun decisions, and move forward as this new NIL game of college football evolves.
I see other teams making adjustments, I do not at this point see Heup making adjustments. As of today we have the same staff, and maybe 2 new players (1 Online/1 unproven WR) out of the portal that will make a difference when we need to replace/upgrade Cooper, Spraggins, and Campbell. We have the SEC player of the year at RB gone and only young talent at this point to replace. At WR we need an experienced, proven player that gets separation and changes games. We definitely have talent according to the star rankings, but most of it is unproven or still getting settled.

Next season FL will be greatly improved, GA will be as good or better due to NIL, AL will continue to pull in talent and most likely settle in and be better, LSU will be better, SC is coming on strong/wouldn't want to play them, TX reloading, TAMU reloading, Auburn will be in year two of stockpiling elite talent top to bottom, Ole Miss continues to try to portal shop and isn't going away, etc...We seem to be treading water at this point. Yes, all this is debatable, just my opinion based on what I see with the changes they are making.
Honestly, If this is what we are going to ride with into next season, we will drop FL, AL, GA, and OK will be 50/50--- that's not going to make the playoff/compete for a championship.

we'll see how it all plays out----- I really like Heup, but I am not seeing going into year 5 what it takes to get to the elite tier level yet from him and the AD, except higher prices on games/concessions, etc... If we can at least replace the talent we lost, then that is definitely a step in the right direction.

Plus our "wet snow" is a lot tougher to deal with than that dry stuff the nertherners get.

It's very good. I keep it on hand. It's good straight but not too expensive to use as a mixer. If you see the full proof, you should grab a bottle as well.

Thanks for the info here and about your friend having it as a staple! I am planning on breaking it open tonight hopefully. I will look for the full proof as well next time I'm out.

Wasn't gonna poke that hornets nest, but the coaching was excellent. Maybe our talent at some positions won't allow our coaches to do what they'd really like to do? Don't know, but the the coaching on display last night was a treat. I was envious.

In case anyone missed it, Mike is already on the job. He will be working this basketball season to learn the rhythm and build the relationship with the partner (I assume Bert) in basketball. I think we will probably see him call a game or two later this season but I assume Bob will finish the season as the guy.

Mike said John Wilkerson is THE voice of Vol baseball and "the best to ever do it." Says he has no interest in getting in his way or messing up his craft. Will probably do some small stuff with Vol baseball, especially if John asks for it. But basically bball is John's baby.
John is great at doing the UT baseball games but he lets Vince do some of the mid-week games and that dude is terrible.

I know you look to me for answers (as you should, I'm right about most everything) but I am just not sure if that statement is true.

I can speak on this from personal experience.

I managed a public works department, with an annual maintenance budget of around $5M-6M. About $3M of that went into personnel (~20 people) and another $1.5M went into paving. That doesn’t take into account vehicles, equipment, signals, consultants, signs, etc. that were needed on a regular basis.

Despite that, we had 300-500 tons of salt, a brine maker, 5 plows to put on trucks, and about 7-8 trucks total that could treat roads.

Now tell me this. Why would I invest any more money into something that only affects the public 5 days a year, when I have to worry about keeping everything else up the other 300 days? Only a fool would make that investment. Now you know the decision-making of every city, county, and state road agency.

Those northern transplants can go back if it hurts their feelings so much. I think our fiscal responsibility is just fine.

That's what I told a "friend" who complained on facebook. Use your dang brain. Ironically, he also regularly posts conspiracies and distrust of government and complains of government spending. I think he legitimately doesn't think radar is real and just doesn't believe anything he can't see. I think he'sa flat earther. It's pretty hilarious. But that's why he's a car salesman and has moved a dozen times around the country for... car sales jobs (no offense to fellow salespersons).

Edit: Oh and... that averages out to $150k per person.... want to hire me? I'm bonafide
