There were crazy storms and weird weather occurances happening centuries ago. The biggest differences between then and now? Up to the minute electronic media, advanced technology, satellites in space, etc. And of course storms of all types seem far worse now because of a world becoming more heavily populated generally results in more people affected by each storm
