They're totally voluntary. It's simply a matter of whether you want to have actual playing time and/or continuation of your scholarship.
I remember back when Coach Spurrier was at USC, he made an interesting comment that was printed. Updating how voluntary preseason practice was going he said something to the affect of we have a lot of players who aren’t going to get much playing time because they don’t participate.

I couldn’t believe he got away with saying that publicly.

I had a quiet confidence about this game, but I was too afraid to voice it. I recall Pruitt on Vol Calls saying that the guys were doing the right things but it wasn’t translating into wins. Surely this had to happen against Cow Pie High, right?

Who knew it would be the turning point of the season and quite likely Pruitt’s career?

It definitely saved the season. Was closer than it needed to be because of a couple of really costly picks from Maurer, but we got the win when we needed it.

This. Missing Spring instantly gives value and priority to those already with chemistry and time in the system. BJ has had as many or more snaps and practice with JG as any WR on the roster. Imo that puts him near the top (at least to start the season).

Top returning receivers:
65 receptions - Palmer
60 (53 from 2017 and on/JG seasons) receptions - Johnson

As for Velus, I think he'll get returner snaps, but idk how many at WR he will get. Jmo, but he hardly did anything at USC (with JTD and Slovis). Don't see him suddenly taking off with JG. It's not all about him though, but also the competition. We heard good things about Gibbs, Keyton and Tillman looked promising last season, and the incoming freshmen look like a set of great prospects.

I agree. Brandon starting this no doubt this season. Brandon know that playbook inside out. He is the only wr on the roster thats going to play slot and outside. They didnt pay for his masters degree for him to sit the bench.

I can’t find the discussion but I’d like to see Ty Chandler in the slot this year and put Banks in the RB room.

Ty is a good receiver and unfortunately JG can’t hit a swing pass or outlet out of the backfield to save his life, so I’m not sure we can take as advantage of his hands. Chandler hasn’t developed physically in the lower body like I thought he might to be an every down back.

Unfortunately Spring was the time to experiment things. I don’t know that they’ll try anything wildly new when things ramp back up.

Put Gaurantano at WR while we're at it i guess

Awesome! Thanks for posting!

I think Bama is gonna have a lot of work to do cleaning up Bryce Young’s mechanics. There’s a lot of sloppiness you can get away with when you play qb for Mater Dei, but he has similar mechanics issues that derailed Tebow’s career. He holds the ball low, has a hitch in his delivery and poor footwork, and all of that combined lengthen the time between when he decides to throw the ball and when it arrives.

That doesn’t matter if you were Tebow on the Gators throwing to wide open receivers, but if matches up at any point with an elite defense that equalizes they talent and he has to fit the ball into tight windows quickly, it’ll be a problem.

I think we got the better qb. Rankings be damned.
