On the Jeremy Pruitt show Pruitt pointed out what seemed like a lot of mental errors in the back end of our defense against Missouri. He also pointed out some lapses in our edge containment against the run. Pruitt always seems to be coaching and of course he points out a lot of positives as well. One of the big negatives he pointed out from Saturday, and he repeated it a few times over the course of the show as he and Bob were reviewing the highlights, is that sometimes we had a lot of guys standing around.
We didn’t have a lot of contribution from our special teams yesterday. No return yardage that I recall, not that there was any available, kickoff out of bounds, and a missed field goal. We’ll need everything we can get from our special teams units this coming week. Given that Georgia has the #1 scoring defense in the conference (we’re at #2) special teams could be the deciding factor. jmo.
Obviously the offensive line put in the best performance we’ve seen in a while but it was against Missouri, who we knew would struggle on both sides of the line of scrimmage. Against Georgia our offensive line will have to be more consistent, like bringing it on every play. I think we’re a lot better than Auburn up front. Auburn had to replace 4 starting Olinemen from last year so their struggles are expected. Our guys this week are going to be facing a front orders of magnitude better than Missouri or South Carolina. jmo.
Georgia so far is #1 in rushing defense, #1 in passing defense, #1 in total defense, and as previously noted #1 in scoring defense. They’ve only allowed their opponents (Arkansas and Auburn) to reach the redzone 2 times total. That’s a league leading best. We’re 2nd best allowing 5 redzone incursions in our first 2 games.
I think everyone knows that we will likely need to be a lot sharper on both sides of the ball and in special teams this coming week in order to come home with the Win. I think our defense will likely play its best game of the season. I’m sure we’re going to work hard on that during this week of preparation. The difference in the game I think probably is going to be our offense vs Georgia’s defense. This will be on Chaney. I mean he’s the key to this game. We probably don’t have to score a lot of points but we have to figure out a way with what we’ve got to score more than anyone else has in recent games against Georgia’s defense. jmo.
I don’t see Georgia’s offense as that much of a threat. Pruitt should have the best defense they have faced thus far. They’re on their 3rd offensive coordinator in 3 years so we should have a slight advantage in familiarity with our offense. They may have fewer options. In the past Georgia has been able to out talent us. We’re closing that gap, at least with our top players. We have the experience advantage. This is probably going to be a helluva physical game. I think we see some things on offense (from our playbook) that we have not yet seen and I think that could be the difference in this game. jmo.
