If you think about it they haven’t had to care cause Phil was at the helm. When that ship started to sink they hadn’t had to deal with a search before, especially a Top 10 program like TN once was.

I don’t think they realized what it took to keep a program at the top cause Phil always kinda controlled a lot of it. When Phil was let go they were left with their thumbs in theirs butts. Then when you make one hire and he bolts after a year, you panic and scramble to save face and money instead of going out and spending the money the first time to get who you want and who can lead us to Championships.

Then it just spiraled out of control and then we became the laughing stock of CFB and a example of what NOT TO DO.

I think it’s gonna take them throwing 50-70 million at a coach kinda like A&M. But then the “Control” issue also remains cause in places like Fl, A&M, OSU, Bama, the coach has A LOT of control, here that’s not the case. It’s a toxic dynamic when you can’t do what you want with Salaries and coaches.
And believe me, coaches talk, and they know how it is here and from what I’ve heard most won’t come cause they are micromanaged to an extent.

So that HAS TO CHANGE, or we are gonna be 4-8 year end year out with a 8-5 ceiling. And that’s the cold hard TRUTH.

All of y’all know what is going on. It’s been said here numerous times.

Anyways, maybe things will change but for now it’s pretty much the same way it’s been for a decade. Phil is making headway but he still has PLENTY of obstacles.
yup

What I don't get...and what baffles me most.

Even if you are micromanaged with staffing etc. if you recruit top 25 talent and you are able to develop that talent the on the field product shouldn't be "4-8" level. 6-6 or 7-5 sure, I can see that because there are 5-6 teams we play each week that if you're not "on point" then you can slip up.

We play Bama, Georgia, FL every year and usually we schedule a big name OOC game. Then you got teams like Missouri/Kentucky/South Carolina that have had better coaches and superior talent so they aren't always easy wins. The 2nd West team is never a given, and with Lane/Leach in Mississippi & Pittman at Arkansas it's not going to be any easier having an easy win with that 2nd SEC West team going forward.

STILL with all that being said...we as a program should have 6 or 7 wins every year if you got top 25 classes and a staff that can develop talent, regardless of how "elite" they are or aren't. So to me it seems more likely that Pruitt & co. are either oversold as talent developers or absolutely sticking a middle finger up at the "higher ups" that want to micromanage things.

What has been made increasingly apparent is Fulmer wasn't as inept as we thought in 2008 and our success had more to do with him than the program around him.

We all kind of assumed he was wasting the brand - turns out he was keeping it afloat.

I think this staff can sell that they didn't take this season seriously, that they used it to try and develop players towards the future. They didn't really care about wins this season. Used it as a big skrimage. Whether true or not I think they can spin it that way. I think playing the games insures an implosion of the class. Not playing gives them a chance.
I think that argument has to be somewhat out the window because I have yet to see any player development this year. That, combined with an apparent aversion to playing more young guys like HB, makes that argument ridiculously weak.

there's a significant opportunity for significant blow back for hiring hugh freeze when we stood on our pulpit and shouted down hiring Schiano.....i'd get familiar with the word 'hypocrite' just in case. that could be a black eye we're not willing to deal with, perception wise in the media or on the recruiting trail.

We’ve been mocked, harangued, derided, lied about, etc. by the sports media for what seems like forever. Go watch the College Gameday elevator commercial again. That should let you know how much of a s**t I give about the media calling us hypocrites.

I want to win. I want to hire someone that will get us out of this miserable cycle of hiring and firing. If Freeze can do that (and I believe there’s a reasonable chance he can, or at least as good as we’ve had in a long while), I think we can manage a bad op-ed or two.

The only thing standing in the way of Tennessee hiring Freeze is Tennessee.

What are they afraid of?

Hurting the reputation of the program? It’s probably as low as it’s ever been right now.

Freeze failing? We’ve been mired in failure for going on 15 years.

NCAA issues? They’re basically toothless anymore, and we’ve been on de facto self-imposed probation for a while now.

SEC approval? Maybe, but they don’t seem to be big fans of ours anyway.
this lol. People are really scared “that it could get worse” 😂😂. Like we aren’t already a doormat that can’t come within 2 TDs of any opponent of merit except for a fluke auburn win and y’all are worried about the unknown of a different coach not named freeze. I’d rather have butch or Dooley back at this point.

The best part about being an SEC coach is having 2-3 decades of experience with the sport and being called an idiot by random people on a message board who have probably never made it past the HS level of the game

I mean I’m all for going and getting freeze but damn this is some hillbilly nonsense

I don't think a person needs to make it past a high school level of the game to know that if you are repeatedly being blown out, then something needs to change.

Pruitt didn't have head coach experience but he does have coordinator experience at winning programs. It is insane that he continues to do the same thing over and over while the losses continue to pileup, given his prior experience.

I can only assume the coaching staff didn't think the season would be played so they just didn't prepare like they should have. I can't really think of any other explanation for what is happening on the field.

And that's a loser move that only perpetuates a loser mentality.
yeah...but we don't lose, by not playing........so.....there's that.
