Napier would be a mediocre hire.
@Weezer
I don't think he'd be mediocre, I just don't think Napier could handle the job the way the program is right now. The HC position is not like it was when Fulmer got fired and Kiffin came in. The football program is in the trash right now and needs someone that can handle the pressure and try to fix it quickly. If not, then the fans will be ready for blood again in a couple of years. A good young coach could have his career crushed at UT. Too many chiefs in the background, just like Auburn.

Freaking Butch. I can't deny that he had some serious hype about him in recruiting, albeit ever so briefly. Particularly that pic of him with Kyle Phillips and Drew Richmond. Never has a guy seemed like "the guy" so much and yet been so far from actually being the guy.

The SEC is going to rapidly descend into like 4 decent programs and then a bunch of absolute dumpster fires. I think coaches are opting out of wanting in this conference.

It’s already that. One elite program, a few decent, and the rest are mediocre at best.

If the guy truly gave Pruitt his word that he would get a five year rebuild, then I respect him standing up for that.

Which highlights why Fulmer is a poor AD. You can't guarantee that kind of time. It's foolish to do so when the possibility that he can fall flat on his face, which he has, exists. If you're even going to even float that kind of promise out there, it needs to come with performance conditions, which reasonably, Pruitt would have failed. I can respect a man keeping his word. I can't respect a man giving his word when it's not really his to keep.

It's CFB in general. You have two "complete" programs right now: Bama and Clemson. OSU is probably still there. OU is really close most years, just needs a QB.

Then you've got the second-tiers of UGA, UF, Oregon, Notre Dame, and now A&M.

Then a huge swath of third-tier programs that basically round most of the top 25.

Then a gigantic mess of programs that range from incompetent to decent but fall outside the rankings.

If Fulmer doesn't cooperate then the Boosters can just refuse to give any more money to the University. Boyd will then have no choice right?
Yep but when half wants to keep Pruit and half. Want to clean house, then the half that gets their way will keep writing checks.
Only hope is the half wanting to clean house can and Will write much bigger checks!

Agree to an extent but no coach continually progresses every single season. Only works that way in a perfect world. And I’m not defending Pruitt.

Name a coach besides Saban, Urban, Dabo and you’ll find seasons where they regress.

For instance, a few of the potential candidates:

Hugh Freeze? Progressed for 4 seasons then went 5-7.

Napier? Still progressing but can’t get much better at ULL than what he’s done so he’s destined to mix in a 9-3 or 8-4 season, which would be a regression albeit one you can certainly live with.

Gus? Followed up 12-2 in season one with 8-5, 7-6, 8-5 and has never sniffed that success again.

The alarming thing with Pruitt is we appear to have regressed from a starting point that was already mediocre. But most coaches don’t continuously progress.

Agree, but you can't regress to the point of 3 and 4 win seasons while never showing that you can get over the hump. Name a blue blood program that will put up with that crap for more than 1 season. EDIT: Besides UT

I love how we still have people on the radio and boards blaming a 21 year old kid at QB instead of the guy being paid 4 million a year to run this program.

There’s no such thing as a “21 year old kid.”

You’re a grown man at that age.

Except for @VFLAndyBowser apparently because he still looks like he’s 12.
