I am terrified of what this means. I’m 95% sure Pruitt is gone and I really think we bury this program if we name Steele HC or even interim HC. This better be a move just to get him here and figure out a spot later on once we get a new coach.
When was the last example of coach who was going to be fired interviewing and hiring coaches, taking transfers, and conducting business as usual. When a coach is dead man walking none of this happens.

I don't think you hire coaches before the head coach comes in. Has Pruitt announced these guys? Don't beat me up, but I'm thinking Steele is going to be our coach.

This. This is why you cannot just look at Marrones record in Jacksonville and take it at face value.

Marrone took over a team that went 3-13..... one of those wins was at the end with him as interim.....

The following year they went 10-6. The Jags had not won double digits since 2007 and had not won their division since 1999. That year they won two playoff games vs Buffalo and put up 45 points in a win Vs Steelers in the Next round. They then lossed 24-20 to NE and had the lead until The final drive. BLAKE BORTLES WENT 23-36 293yd 1td 0in IN FOXBOROUGH.

The next year they hired Tom Coughlin as president of operations and despite starting the year 3-1 including a win over New England..... the plan was in place to began a tear down Bc trade rumors started flying and they wanted out of the bortles contract. Thus leading them to trading 4 prime pro bowlers from the best 4 man front defense of the decade just to switch to a 3 man front (their following drafts point to this).

How would this translate to being the coach of Tennessee? Idk. But it’s lazy to just look at his record and not actually look at the context of the situation and organization as a whole.

Look at Jim Caldwell for example. He had Manning in Indy, two great years. Manning is injured.... ownership wants to tank and they go 2-14.... Caldwell is painted as a bad coach.

he gets hired again and in 4 years of the lions coach he went 11-5, 7-9, 9-7, and 9-7........ you see what the lions have been since him.

Point being: in the NFL... a head coach can only do so much.... Owner/GM/Front Office and QB have more power and say on outcome than the actual head coach.

We see it happening now In Philadelphia. They fire a Super Bowl winning coach his first down year because Doug never was sold on Wentz but the ownership was. Gonna be interesting to see what direction they go Bc they seem keen on keeping Wentz in green.... for some reason.

I dunno how I feel about Marrone at UT, but he definitely got screwed in Jacksonville. That team has been in full on tank mode for two years. I actually thought they were more competitive than I expected in the few Jags games I saw this year.

You support going 3-7?
I support Pruitt because I believe he can develop into a good head coach here. After his second year, this program was on an upward trajectory. Then corona hit. Folks can holler excuses all they’d like but the facts are the facts. It had a profound impact on this team. Young guys don’t develop with no spring, summer, or fall practice.

What kind of world are we living in where a man isn’t allowed to support his head coach? This is cancel culture bull dung right here.
Nah man. No cancel culture. Just obvious you're only here to troll. No real Vols fan would ever support a coach that just went 3-7, especially after the run of bad coaches we've had for nearly 15 years.

This is Fulmers doing. Not Pruitt. They would have announced him as a position coach if Pruitt was being retained. Instead it’s an open position so we aren’t stuck with more buyouts.

The Hire of Steele does a few things to narrow the field.

If you make a change it gives the kids someone to believe is worth stick around for and he can keep things from going to hell. This assuming we are idiots and don’t have someone lined up. Also keeps some transfers you like from making quick decision elsewhere and maybe hold on to hope longer with them.

If a change is made, it narrows the field of replacements of who is likely in the short list. You can definitely count Gus out. I think someone here said Steele would also mean no Chadwell. It also means no Napier since that appeared to be an issue he had with Auburn was forcing staff in him.

Freeze/Steele Combo would do well but we are too scared to hire Freeze.

Herman while I have no clue if he would want this job I could see being accepting of Steele. I don’t think he would be adamant about any DC in particular since Orlando went to USC last yr when Herman was talked into making a change. Maybe he would want Ash but I think he would do good to have a Steele to help with recruiting connections and a guy that has successfully called defense with a tempo offense coach.

Marrone definitely would be good with Steele and Garner.

It sure does seem to be lining up to be Marrone though. You can keep Chaney/Tee/JG/Osovet and hire a OL coach. Let Steele hire Defensive staff and you likely don’t lose much in transfers or recruiting

This is good analysis.

On Basilio’s extra hour they discussed the possibility that Steele is there to be on staff but also available as interim HC to fill the gap when the time comes. Does that mean a 1 month gap or are we talking Steele as interim HC until Nov/Dec 2021?
