My biggest hope through all of this is that Tennessee is such a huge brand and generates so much revenue for the conference and ncaa that they can’t just hammer us. Few lost scholarships, bowl ban, etc. look at the punishments for USC and Ohio state..... obviously they didn’t get killed.

I'm in agreement with your sentiment here. Especially when you talk about needing a HC that want to be at UT, not because it's a P5 job, but because it's Tennessee. We continue to make assumptions about which candidates would see the Tennessee HC job as their ultimate destination job (dream job if you will). However, the problem being, the list of candidates that see UT in this light in the midst of the turmoil we've experienced over the past 15 years is limited. I can't help but wonder if, IF, Kevin Steele ends up the interim, or even HC he doesn't view the Tennessee job as a destination job. And if that is the case, could he have enough success by building a staff and winning enough to make the job more desirable than it's been recently? Maybe he could be that 'bridge coach' to stabilize the program?

I'm not rooting for this scenario by any means, however with the potential addition of Garner, I'd be intrigued to see what his coaching staff could look like if given the chance.

Good post. I'm not in the camp that Steele failed miserably at Baylor, so he will fail miserably here. Baylor was miserable back then. It's not the job it is now. No talent. I don't want Steele as HC because of the good ole boy club politics he plays. But if Phil gets his way with the deciders and it is as the HC and not the interim, I can live with it and give him a shot if they hire an innovative OC. Nobody should complain about his D expertise. After flaming out at Clemson he went back to Saban's coaching reclamation program and has been good ever since. Sub 20 PPG average at Auburn over the past 5 seasons even counting this season's 23.6 while having to deal with Nix and the squirrelly Mahlzahn O turning it over and doing 3 and outs so often. That's a "yes!" in my book. Fixing the D and incrementally improving the O means 7-8 wins potentially in the first season. With Bryant coming in along with Henry, Butler and Middleton returning - there's good talent in the front 7 if they can get somebody to pressure from the edge. Garner would be the guy to recruit and develop who they already have.

Pruitt just needs to be gone or he will meddle in it all and make it worse. My concern is they then make Steele HC and keep Chaney as OC. That will mean nothing good for recruiting and the O scheme.

You justify it by forcing him to draw the short straw. Fulmer will protect his pick until he has no other choice. I have no doubts that this will all be blame on another party other than Pruitt. When in reality Pruitt probably put them up to it when he couldn’t just rake in talent like Bama.
