I was thinking Pittsburgh where he won a NC. Although I think they may have been independent now that you mention it?

Even still, NC going undefeated.

Independent & Big East have never been Power 5 though...

Power 5:
Big 8 (Big 12)
Big Ten
ACC
SEC
PAC12

I don’t know why everyone is getting so caught up in all this. Speculation is pointless at this juncture. Keep your expectations extremely low because it’s likely going to be the same old song and dance: Haslam stooge AD, milquetoast coach, fans unhappy blah blah blah.

If it’s not and we crush the hires then that’ll be encouraging and I’ll be excited again.

If he gets vetted and comes up clean how so?
Briles is off limits purely because of his connection with that scandal. It isn't like he could be "vetted" and have his name totally cleared anyway, even if he did nothing wrong.

There is reason to think he was scapegoated to a certain extent because Baylor paid him a ton of money to go away. However, rightly or wrongly, his association with that will never wash off and he's totally off limits.

I’d argue we’re much better off now than last time. Roster is much better and Fulmer is gone. AV and others have said he’s been a big problem attracting good coaches.

The roster is currently better but literally in every other way we are in much worse shape than the Currie led search in 2017. We're heading into late January with spring classes having already started (timing worse), coming off a 3-7 (worse), in the midst of a pandemic that limits recruiting and finances (far far worse) and staring down the barrel of major NCAA sanctions (infinitely worse) and without an AD in place (also way worse). When Gundy was offered $7M and turned it down and every other sitting P5 HC turned us down, we had an AD in place and none of the other challenges -- only a weak roster.

This is not a good job at all right now.

What violations? His lawyer put out a statement that he was used as the scapegoat. If he gets vetted cleanly why not?

He connected to rapes at a university.
Please tell me you aren’t one who believes HC don’t know everything that happens.

Because Tennessee just had one of those. Fulmer tried to cover for him and they both got canned.

Public perception has more weight than the truth, let's be honest.

People perceive Briles to be the leader of a gang rape ring at Baylor. His reputation will never recover. It's the unfortunate side of things, but people don't care about the truth if it comes out. They stick to what they have been told.

Briles is done at major college football.

If we have a search firm and Tennessee can prove he was the scapegoat bring me Art Briles. Remember he re signed from his high school job and hasn't taken a position anywhere yet. Also fits the P5 experience. Proven winnner.

Not sure he’d be a good pick. This 65 yr old man right here is currently smack dab in the middle of some type of life crisis.

It's like Schiano with the Penn State scandal, except there's a lot more linking Briles to what happened at Baylor than Schiano to what happened at PSU.

I want to win. If reasonable doubt can be cast. Hire him. This isn't James Franklin who actively tried to cover it up.

That’s like saying Joe Pa had no idea. They knew and so did Briles.

Just reading the tea leaves there are only 4 people who want this job, maybe five: Steele, Chadwell, Kiffin, Freeze, and maybe Herman don't know about him. UT will not hire Kiffin or Freeze. We know this. It will not happen. So that leaves you with maybe 3 candidates. Herman has a very bad reputation for his dealings with boosters and staff at Texas. he's out.

so now we're down to two: Chadwell or Steele. They are going to hire Steele.
Sadly that’s 3 decent coaches that want it. A lot of schools would trade for Kiffin and Freeze maybe even Chadwell and we will still mess it up.

Which is why if you are going to fire the HC with cause, let the AD "retire", and select a new AD, you have to do it at light speed. We need a new coach by Monday/Tuesday. Not in 2 weeks.

Steele has an impossible task. If UT loses lots of players, again just shows the gross incompetence

In theory, Fulmer's deal has him as a stabilizing figurehead until his replacement is hired. In reality, Steele is making do with a coordinator who's been job-seeking elsewhere, a coordinator who doesn't really recruit, an assistant whose contract is expiring, another assistant who's been looking around, an assistant nobody likes who's hanging on by his fingernails and Jay Graham. Plus a skeleton crew of support staffers. And the only reason we even have Steele is because of the guys who just got the boot.

I would think to eliminate these transfers, UT has to act fast in getting the new HC in. If you hire a big time guy that will give players reason to stay but if you prolong the search and keep Steele as interim past NSD it’s gonna deplete the roster
