I think Josh Heupel is more of an up & comer and has more potential to elevate us in the future, plus I think he's very likely to stick here for as long as possible. Don't really see him leaving to take another P5 job anytime soon. Could OU snag him away? I mean maybe but seems like Riley is planning to be there awhile so I'm not too worried about that situation.
Gus would have been a solid hire here and I was on board when he became available. Don't think he would have won us the SEC, but he might have managed a trip to Atlanta. What he would have done though is calmed the waters, at Auburn he was able to get and keep his staff happy. Most the turnover happened when OCs left for HC jobs, which is what you want to see happen. But really the draw for me was his SEC experience and knowing he'd be able to recruit in this conference just fine.
We'll see how it works out for us, but I know one thing is certain UCF isn't going to be upset with Gus as HC. If he was able to pull down 8.5 wins a season in the SEC West he sure as hell isn't going to be taking a step backwards in the American.
