Most coaches do because that's part of the pitch. There was no pitch needed when he hired Josh. I think they knew what they were looking for but not exactly who. Obviously I could be wrong, but are you also disagreeing with the vast majority of fans not being tuned into this search like us nuts on the recruiting forum?

I think Shannon has been what DW has been waiting for UCF to hire their coach as somebody has said he likes him and hired him so that’s why we’ve seen garner, jancek and martinez mentioned

This should be a clear sign of what the perception is in this program.

I will go as far as to say Huepel was by far the best coach White could get. Everything else was angling for raises.

It’s on Huepel to dig us out of this now
Coaches are not angling for raises. We are approaching good coaches and their teams want to keep them. It helps their current team that we are a mess right now

Let's also keep in mind Gus is 55 and has no need/want for big money contracts thanks to his time at Auburn.

He very well may have been waiting on a G5 job to come up in a warm retirement town, and UCF would fit that bill. He'll still make comfortable money there as well. Wouldn't surprise me at all if he doesn't leave that job and retires there.

Interesting perspective, in most of what you said I have a similar view of Heupel. If anything needs to be fixed at UCF, would that not reflect on Heupel?
The difference between them is that at least Heupel's side of the ball was good, which is why you can reasonably believe he is a good defensive staff away from the complete package.

Gus had a great defense and a terrible offense. Gus is also an OC who gave the keys to the defense completely to Kevin Steele. So where does that leave you?

The people who like Gus have never bothered to look past his HC record. His offense was out dated by 2016, he never adjusted, and Kevin Steele signed his checks for 3 seasons by backpacking him.

I think it at least speaks to the quality of coaches we have seemingly pursued and position coaches at that, not current coordinators. When teams put up big money to keep position coaches you know they are viewed as quality and crucial to success.

2017: 33.9ppg (27th ranked)
2018: 30.9ppg (48th ranked)
2019: 33.2ppg (28th ranked)
2020: 25.1ppg (89th ranked)

Big drop off in COVID season, most the SEC had similar dips. You can just not like Gus' offense, and I think against the SEC's top tier teams it is outdated. But he's never had a terrible offense, he's had terrible games though. As far as scoring points though and winning games Gus is anything but average/terrible.

He's in that Mark Richt spot now and for most of the SEC that's not good enough.

GUS MALZAHN LOST TO JEREMY PRUITT AND JG!!!

Plus, every QB under him gets worse. Every QB under Heupel gets better. They did not upgrade. We'll see what happens when Gus doesn't have Steele and Garner to cover for him. Of course, he's also in an easier conference so his offense may still work there. He isn't a bad coach, but they didn't upgrade imo
One game doesn’t define a career.
Gus beat Nick several times, does that make him a better coach?
