I totally get what your saying. But I do t remember anyone getting excited about DD after lane had us compete right year 1 with great recruits on the hook. Other ones I definitely remember these comments

The selling point for DD was lineage. The son of Vince Dooley. That experiment failed.
Butch had HC experience, but all at lower levels. I really think the pressures of SEC football broke him.
Pruitt was a successful DC for probably(pains me to say it) the best college football coach of all time, so the hope was that had rubbed off on him. It didn't. Not even in the slightest.

Heupel has been a successful OC at Oklahoma and in the SEC, then had moderate success at UCF as a HC. Really, his only meh season there was the COVID year, where several of his players opted out of the season.

So in a lot of ways, Heupel just has a better resume, which is reason for many to have more hope we'll finally land on the right guy.
