Today’s practice observations from VQ...

Tennessee was back on the practice field Saturday morning for the eighth time this camp – following the OFF day and Thursday’ scrimmage.

The team was dressed in shells. Jimmy Calloway, Jacob Warren and Trinity Bell were not in shoulder pads. Len’Neath Whitehead had only his helmet while Kaemen Marley was dressed in full, but off to the side. Marley has not been a full participant during camp, as far as team stull and Bell is still recovering from offseason ACL surgery.

Defense went turnover circuits to begin the session. Defensive line worked on combatting a cut block and then getting hands up to disrupt a pass. Linebackers worked scoop and score while defensive backs repped drops and ball drills.

The offensive line – that saw Wright, Carvin, Mays, Spraggins and Mays up first in drills – was getting some excitement out of Glen Elarbee today. That unit struggled in the scrimmage Thursday, so Elarbee was looking for a bounce back effort.

The group worked drive drill where the offensive player would come off the line of scrimmage to take on the technique and drive him sometimes 15 yards down the field. Elarbee could easily be heard, screaming ‘straight, straight’ throughout he entire rep.

Quarterbacks worked pocket presence while in drills, stepping up in the pocket or flushing out when evaded from the pocket. The order appeared to be Milton, Hooker and then Bailey while we were out there.

I continue to be impressed with the way Milton is throwing the football. Yes it’s routes on air and yes there is no rush, but he’s consistently connected on the deeper routes in that session while the other two have missed more, in comparison and in my opinion.

A lot of time on the underneath routes, Milton makes the motion look effortless with great feet and the fastest release of the three. A lot can change in a live situation (like on Thursday, for the most part) but can’t help but mention what we see when we come out here.

Rodney Garner will meet with us here at 11:15 and will then be followed by Elijah Simmons, La’Trell Bumphus and transfer DJ Terry. Also, Brian Maurer was not at practice this morning.

Sounds like Milton likely the guy. Let’s roll!

Could anyone see college football have a preseason like the NFL? Just sitting here wondering that thought. With the massive changes likely coming, would this be something schools would want to try?
