Doug Mathews discussing the scrimmages he attended:

We will almost always run a press man coverage. Burrell and Taylor are the two starters and that isn’t in debate. Cornerback should be a strength. Theo Jackson and Deneiko Slaughter both look good in the nickel.

The transfer Mohan at LB is solid in coverage and will be brought in for passing downs. Very fast.

Trashing how bad we were aligned on defense last year. Said it was much better on the first two scrimmages.

Defensive line has been “good and close to very good” against the run in the scrimmages. Said they are much more physical and “so much better fundamentally.” A lot of bodies to rotate that can play in this league.

Defense outplayed the offense. Rain played a big part of that. Impressed with Tim Banks. Thinks we will make a huge improvement in quality of play in the defense.

Really emphasizing how poorly we were coached last season.

Will run a ton of different sets on offense. More to come after the break....

I grew up in Knoxville going to games all the time. I attended UT and look back on that time fondly. I want to win as much as anyone. However, it’s like this place has amnesia. You’re buying into reports from the same writers who have been lying to you for years. It’s like an endless cycle of “Old coach bad, new coach good” echo chamber.

I think Heupel has a chance to be very good here, but I don’t trust the local writers who cover the team. They have a vested interest in keeping up subscriptions, clicks, and false hopes. If they actually try to tell the truth they get RUNNOFT which is what my original comments were about.
The national media is usually better on topics like this, but the problem is we’ve been so bad we don’t get the amount of coverage we’re used to.

Just last week our Athletic beat writer compared us to Iowa State (as a program and fanbase) on his way out the door. And plenty of other journalists chimed in to corroborate and substantiate the question/comparison. I think that comparison is nuts! I was irate when I read it. But perception is reality, and how people with no skin in the game are you is usually your reality.

Our local media is a bunch of guys who grew up Tennessee fans. It doesn’t mean they’re always biased in favor of Tennessee, although VolQuest certainly is, and that’s where we get most of our information. They’ve followed these kids through the recruiting process, have gotten to know them, like them, and depend on them for information, and those things have skewed their analysis.

More on the team from Mathews:

Coach Ekeler specializes in kick/punt coverage on special teams. Paxton Brooks will be the punter: Avg of 43 yards and 36% of his punts have been inside the 20. 62% of Brooks’s kickoffs have resulted in touchbacks. McGrath probably the kicker but not for certain. A lot to rotate at returner.

McDonald and Charles have a bright future at safety. They won’t start but have a lot of talent.

Simmons has the opportunity to be “an outstanding player” if he loses some weight. Terry is the most athletic of the DL but needs to develop.

If y'all can volunteer in any way please do. If not, pray.

Dozens missing and death toll over 10 last I saw in Waverly, TN.

McEwen recieved 17" of rain in under 24hrs yesterday. Dickson, Humphreys, Houston, and Hickman Counties had catastrophic flash flooding.

For reference, the Nashville flood of 2010 had a 24hr record of only 9.25", and only recieved 13.57" in 48hrs. This event shattered it. Nobody was prepared.

That’s awful…. Prayers sent!

More from Mathews:

Baron is a great player. Will line up over the TE almost always. Young is very athletic. Bumphus is solid.

LB is a huge question mark.

Milton probably the starter.

OL only has about 6 players that should be playing with Calbert out. OL is set. Cade and Carvin versatile if injuries happen.

Fant and Warren are the TEs. Fant should catch a lot of balls.

Evans and Small are the standouts at RB

WRs have a lot of talent. Should have a lot to rotate there.
