Ya I wonder how much of his failure was bad coaching. I pretty much give every Butch Era kid a pass. I don't think a single player got better under him. It was crazy how many kids best season was their freshman season with Butch.I wanted several times to kick Butch’s a$$. Kid looked like a deer in headlights the whole game. It was cringe worthy.
Thanks for posting this. Matthews is one of the best in the media for actual football knowledge, so I love these recaps of his show.Doug Mathews discussing the scrimmages he attended:
We will almost always run a press man coverage. Burrell and Taylor are the two starters and that isn’t in debate. Cornerback should be a strength. Theo Jackson and Deneiko Slaughter both look good in the nickel.
The transfer Mohan at LB is solid in coverage and will be brought in for passing downs. Very fast.
Trashing how bad we were aligned on defense last year. Said it was much better on the first two scrimmages.
Defensive line has been “good and close to very good” against the run in the scrimmages. Said they are much more physical and “so much better fundamentally.” A lot of bodies to rotate that can play in this league.
Defense outplayed the offense. Rain played a big part of that. Impressed with Tim Banks. Thinks we will make a huge improvement in quality of play in the defense.
Really emphasizing how poorly we were coached last season.
Will run a ton of different sets on offense. More to come after the break....

Not trying to sound like a jerk, but I’m not sure why folks like you follow sports that make you miserable. I say that having been there, if something makes me miserable I have to get away from it at least for a little while. At this point many of us are invested in this coaching change because we hope and pray this is the positive turn and frankly that journey is part of the fun in enjoying eventual success. If this is the positive turnaround, guys like you will never be happy and you’ll just be actively trying to poke holes in it the whole time.
You ourght to be at home, lyin' in bed!Lived near there when I was a kid.
Because we aren't bandwagon fans and can accept reality. It'll just make our (eventual) rise that much sweeter too
Oh my!!! Praying! If y'all can volunteer in any way please do. If not, pray.
Dozens missing and death toll over 10 last I saw in Waverly, TN.
McEwen recieved 17" of rain in under 24hrs yesterday. Dickson, Humphreys, Houston, and Hickman Counties had catastrophic flash flooding.
For reference, the Nashville flood of 2010 had a 24hr record of only 9.25", and only recieved 13.57" in 48hrs. This event shattered it. Nobody was prepared.
I grew up in Knoxville going to games all the time. I attended UT and look back on that time fondly. I want to win as much as anyone. However, it’s like this place has amnesia. You’re buying into reports from the same writers who have been lying to you for years. It’s like an endless cycle of “Old coach bad, new coach good” echo chamber.
I think Heupel has a chance to be very good here, but I don’t trust the local writers who cover the team. They have a vested interest in keeping up subscriptions, clicks, and false hopes. If they actually try to tell the truth they get RUNNOFT which is what my original comments were about.
Hate this happened. Glad no one was hurt. That looks awful.Yea it was the worst my family has ever seen it. We lost a barn, bush hog, a plow, and all our hay rings. Also the road washed out and is gone in front of our house. I still consider us lucky, our home or lives were in no danger, but a lot were not so lucky.
I am LMAO.A horse walked into a bar, and the bartender said, “Why the long face?” The horse, unable to understand the English language, promptly crapped on the floor and left.

Wait...is he one of the best or hardly ever right? I think we have to take into consideration that the journalists that cover our team have had to deal with years of covering a team that has underperformed. So if we have been disappointed in the final record, the journalists who told us about the athletes on the team are not to blame if those athletes did not do much of anything impressive on a team that managed to make people think KY is now a powerhouse.......then they end up impressing in the NFL.Thanks for posting this. Hyams, Adams, Ferrara, off the top of my head are local media who did not grow up Tennessee fans. Probably plenty more if I thought about it.The national media is usually better on topics like this, but the problem is we’ve been so bad we don’t get the amount of coverage we’re used to.
Just last week our Athletic beat writer compared us to Iowa State (as a program and fanbase) on his way out the door. And plenty of other journalists chimed in to corroborate and substantiate the question/comparison. I think that comparison is nuts! I was irate when I read it. But perception is reality, and how people with no skin in the game are you is usually your reality.
Our local media is a bunch of guys who grew up Tennessee fans. It doesn’t mean they’re always biased in favor of Tennessee, although VolQuest certainly is, and that’s where we get most of our information. They’ve followed these kids through the recruiting process, have gotten to know them, like them, and depend on them for information, and those things have skewed their analysis.
