Recruiting Forum Football Talk IV

I was talking to a buddy of mine about recruiting and why a lot of these kids go to loaded schools where they will be way down the depth chart. He is friends with a guy whose kid was a five star recruit recently and chose to go to one of those schools. To my surprise, their reasoning wasn’t “I’m the best I want to compete with the best.” Or “I’m good enough to play right away.” They chose that school because “It’s better to sit on the sidelines for 2-3 years, then play for one year and get drafted.”

That floored me. I wonder if that’s what Saban and Smart are selling against teams like us that are selling immediate playing time. “Why go there and play for four years risking injury when all you need is one good year with us.”

This also makes me wonder how many of those four and five star guys waste their opportunity riding the bench there. Sure they have put a lot of guys into the league, but do that have as many or more busts as schools like us?

Good observation. Once this thing gets rolling Tennessee will be a very attractive destination for high quality players. The transfer portal will be a nice reservoir for talent in the interim.

I thought this was common sense. Not trying to be rude but that’s pretty simple

I mean it makes sense from a logical standpoint, but I just assumed that most of the really good players are competitors and wouldn’t want to sit on the bench. I figured the pitch for Bama and Georgia would be more geared towards a competition and having an opportunity. If the former is what kids are buying then the new transfer rules won’t hurt Bama/Georgia like I thought they would. They will keep those kids wasting their talent and then poach the best players from other schools who have been starting for a couple of years.

I believe the staff knows they were behind the 8 ball for high school recruiting in ‘22 so they are going to focus on the portal to fill immediate needs in this class. Then go all in on high school recruiting for ‘23 and beyond with the portal to plug holes.

Don’t judge this staff’s ability on high school kids this year.
