I hate this take. Who cares. All that playing hard and 3 turnovers and 140 yards in penalties. And 27 points given up in the second quarter.

We say this every year when we lose to an average P5 team.

They finished 5-5 in conference last year and everything I saw said they were expected to be the same if not a little worse this year. They lost a ton on defense.

I bet they end up 7-5 overall in a mediocre conference.

Here are my thoughts:

I don’t understand melting down. Pitt was favored and every national writer or figure I heard picked us to lose. We were considered to be a bad team that had lost too much and couldn’t absorb much in the way of injuries because we have no depth. Well, we got plenty of injuries. It shouldn’t be a surprise that we lost. Sad because we had chances to win, but there’s no cause to melt down. The team is exactly what everyone said they’d be.

Pitt is fine. They’ll win 7 or 8. Nothing special, but fine.


Speaking of living up to one’s billing, Milton is exactly what they said he was, too. He has all the measurables but he simply doesn’t have the accuracy. The opportunities were there to land some huge blows early and Milton didn’t have it.

This isn’t the end of the world. The team could improve over the course of the season and claw their way to 6 wins. They could’ve wound up getting blown out but kept fighting. There were flashes of good things.

As a fanbase, we need to learn to accept that this is not a slump anymore. This is just what Tennessee is right now. It’s a .500ish program. That’s not to say we can’t ever be something more. But this is simply where we are.

This doesn’t hurt very much. That’s a sign of apathy, as was the very empty upper bowl. People will only swallow bad football for so long. Unfortunately, the doldrums this program is in make climbing out that much harder.

Wright had a big false start, but I do not believe it was his fault. Lots of confusion on that play

Call me crazy, but with all things considered (amount of starters lost, only second game with offensive system) I am really not too bummed about this one. Seen a lot worse. And iirc, a lot of posters before the season wanting to “just be fun to watch on offense and keep games close” - which I think we did today.

We all knew what this season was going to be like.
