Nah, you missed the part where I said the problem with Barnes isnt getting there, its showing he can get back. He peaked at Clemson in year 3, stayed one more year then left. He peaked at TX in year 4 then could never get back to that level, he has peaked at TN in year 4. Hes gotta show he can get back.

oh i was only making the point that it has taken us quite a while to get from Pearl to Barnes and from Fulmer to Heupel with several mediocre coaches in between... and the jury is still out on whether we can handle either of them as coaches over the long term.

Time will tell!

Oh well. Whoever we have, I'll be supporting them. And laughing at the nutters in the fanbase all the while!! ;-)

Barnes made it to the SECT finals more than Pearl did, was #1 for longer than Pearl was, and won as many SEC titles as Pearl did. Pearl did take the team to its lone EE though.

Barnes vs Pearl though, Pearls program was growing, and he was raising the level quickly, 1 year, then 2 sweet sixteens, then one year, then an EE, then one year then who knows what? With Barnes if he doesnt get there this year which it isnt looking likely we are talking 4 years between runs.
Basically if we did a graph Pearls graph would show a steady climb with small dips. Barnes would show a stead climb and then a huge drop that still hasnt even reached the spot the initial climb did.

Some additional info on this move:
Tennessee is adding a position to its staff to hire High, so he’s not replacing anyone who has left. He will be in the Vols’ personnel department, and they haven’t decided on a title for him.
At North Carolina, High was involved in everything from recruiting and scouting to roster construction/management and the transfer portal. I would expect his duties at Tennessee to include some work with the transfer portal.

I'd argue we've struggled to replace bad coaches with significantly better ones partly because they know how far we've fallen and how ridiculously impatient our fanbase is.

I remain utterly amazed Josh Heupel took the job last January, stepping into the mess he did.

Hope he can hold it all together if we only win 7 next year!

I think it starts at the top and finally seem to have hired a competent AD and an administration that is willing to support our Athletics programs…. They are way more important than the coaches we hire.

My whole point of mention Pearl was because everyone acts like Barnes is the only coach here who can make a tournament or be at the toward the top of the league, and that just isnt true. Pearl is the reason I think TN B Ball can be good. Just like Fulmer and Majors are the reason we think TN football can be good. Delmonico is the reason we think TN Baseball can be good. Pat for WBB, the Weeklys etc..... Barnes isnt some great messiah and the only person that can have success here.
And I get football being a mess has a bunch of people scared off of making a change because they wanna play the do you want to be in the wilderness game, but we have different people in charge now. Hopefully much more competent with more money and better people around them. This isnt the same as the moron Hamilton making a hire followed by Bama Dave

How many NFL teams sign "big time" free agents and then don't do squat? Yes, Tampa Bay did last year, but that is an anomaly.
You build through the draft....and recruiting. JMO

I get what you are saying, but the BB program hasn’t won anything since Grant and Admiral left.

I’m sorry, but as a head coach of a D-1 basketball program, you shouldn’t wait for a 19 year to come to you and ask why he isn’t playing half way through the season. You as the coach should tell him the 1st game. Stop with the mind games and trying to teach someone a lesson when there isn’t one to learn. Be the grown up and go to the kid.
