FWIW I pretty much expected the QB play we saw. I have been saying for months we don’t have a QB. For all the people screaming for Bailey the reason you aren’t seeing him is because our offensive line is straight dog ****. Without Hooker or Milton we would have even less of a running game. Also Bailey would get killed back there.

Given the personnel we have I have been pleasantly surprised with the defense. You can definitely tell they are better coached and the staff is taking journeyman and turning them into contributors. I really wish we had more SEC level defensive lineman we could rotate because it was obvious they were gassed when the pass rush fell off the cliff. Also all knew linebacker would be a major weakness so it is what it is. Big drop off after Banks and Mitchell.

For my money Hype had a good game plan and he already has the decked stacked against him with all the holes in the roster. The only issue I really had with him was not challenging the spot when it was obvious he made it and the 4th down call. 4th and less than a yard can we not line up under center and sneak it?

To sum it up I think we have the best group of developers we have had in over 10 years. I just think the program and roster are in a worse spot than they have been in a long time. Once again I expected the QB room to be bad but the offensive line has been the biggest disappointment for me and showed the least amount of growth. 10 lineman my ass.

Pass rush suffered once Pitt went to 7 man protection. We will see teams doing that a lot this year if we start getting pressure from our front 4.

“I don’t think anybody in their right minds expected more than .500 this year.”

There we’re a few, but not many. And I agree .500 is still very much on the table. Yet, some here have already forgotten that.

“Nobody is burning mattresses over this loss”

This I very much disagree with. Read these posts again. Some are far more than just grumbling and disappointed; they’ve already given up on the season, the QBs, the team, and the coaches. I don’t get it. I’m not surprised, but I don’t get it.
People overreact and cry every year and will continue to do so. We are dealing with a first world problem. I wish these people really mean what they say and would leave. Its no different than all this cancel culture stuff going around except it’s related to sports. If things aren’t going my way I want everyone to feel my pain and pay for it.

That’s not true…. We hired one of the biggest staffs in college football with lane kiffin…. He bailed on us so late that we were stuck with an interim or Dooley…. The next time…. We had one of the hottest commodities in college football Charlie strong hired…. He bailed on us for Texas and we got Butch Jones….. After Jones….. we had the absolute meltdown of a coaching search which led to every coach around the country turning us down…. It led to Pruitt…. This year we tried to get Franklin or other big name coaches…. They turned us down so we got Heup ….. we couldn’t even hire away the Oklahoma state coach….. we have to make coaches and recruits want to come to our university…. Making it a positive environment helps.
But this can't be. We (UT) never try to hire a "diverse hire!"

The QB position needs to be fixed but so does the defense…. The defense is not doing what it needs to do to win games…. They have had some good moments though.
I hope BY lives up to the hype. We need more pressure on the QB, but we also HAVE to do a better job keeping contain. Pickett wore us out on the outside because our ends kept getting caught too far up field

I don’t buy into that. Milton has only had a couple designed run plays. Tayven Jackson is a hand picked CJH recruit and he runs very little for his high school team. All coaches would prefer a mobile qb but I don’t see anything from this offense that shows the coach wants to have the qb running the ball. I think he wants an accurate passer that can read the defense quickly. Having a qb that can move in the pocket or roll out is much more important. Bailey held the ball forever last year. I don’t know if that’s still a problem but I don’t think speed is the issue.

We’ve definitely called designed runs, and I watched some UCF highlights last week, and the QB had several TD runs inside the 10 yard line in a game against Memphis. It’s part of their offense if they have a guy who can run. Again, it’s a numbers game, and they like running it when they spread the opponent out.

I was expecting it to be more aggressive based on what JH keeps preaching but that may be hindered by our depth.

This is simply not true. If you think those were the only names and then we went bargain bin shopping, then you are completely wrong. We could have had Patterson or Cut after Kiffin left. Admin made terrible hires and saying fans had anything to do with that is asinine.

Strong didn’t bail on us for Texas. He stayed at Louisville.

I believe Patterson was available after Fulmer- not in January after Kiffin. In hindsight, Cut would have been a stabilizer but not someone that everyone agreed on and is not a rah rah guy.

But the gist was that we have taken swings and this last time around we did, and we did try with Strong. Everyone has money these days, and great sitting P5 coaches aren’t leaving their schools. UGA has hired two coordinators and a G5 coach their last 3 times, and UF has hired two G5 coaches and two assistants before Mullen and after Spurrier. The landscape of hiring coaches like that is gone.

Man people really going off on fans for not showing up. We have sucked for over a decade and still do not look like a good team. This is a 6-6 at best team and yet people are going off on fans for spending time with their families and enjoying their weekends. This is craziness. How about you blame the administration for taking this fanbase for granted and serving us s*** for years. I don’t blame a single person who saves their hard earned money from going to see the Vols right now.
PREACH…. Totally agree. Going off on Fans for not packing it in is absurd. After all that’s happened and the bs we’ve had to deal with over the past decade. I don’t blame anyone if they don’t want to go watch in Neyland. It’s laughable to get upset at fans for that. UT Admin needs to get serious about winning then we can start talking attendance

Admin has obviously made tons of mistakes, but I think panic hiring Dooley instead of keeping Kippy for an interim year was one of the biggest.

No its true. This is all on UT and nobody else. You can spin it every which way you want but Tenn football is in the shape that its in because of their decisions they made. Tenn went cheap period with each hire except for Kiffins staff. Nobody with a name wanted this job because UT had already put the program in the dumps.

Arkansas loving the win over Texas.

agreed

Being reminded that we could have had Gary Patterson after Fulmer, especially because that's exactly who I wanted us to hire at the time, has got me enraged at Mike Hamilton all over again. IMO the single person most responsible for the implosion of Tennessee football. Whiffed on Patterson, and then could've hired Cutcliffe but wouldn't let him bring his staff. Patterson keeps the program at the elite-tier and Cut may have had a 5-7 season or two in real lean years, but certainly not the six and probably seven we've had since Kiffin bolted. We might not be elite, but we wouldn't be the has-been afterthought we've become.

We fired Fulmer for 5-7 seasons.

Were fired Fulmer for 5-7 seasons.

I wonder anymore whether it was worth it. I think Fulmer was essentially through, but his recruiting was still top tier and he might have at least kept things afloat. Firing him was justifiable in my mind, but Hamilton screwed up the replacement twice, and by then we'd fallen into a hole.

So would we be where we are now if we would have given Gruden the Saban-like control he wanted the first go around? Granted, his path with the Raiders has washed him up considerably now and I am in NO WAY trying to “make the list” and throw his name out there again. Just curious if he would have been successful that first go around (Gruden Mania!!!) and we wouldn’t be the mangy dog begging for scraps at the SEC table.
